It's not just mastodon😬that's like the one rule of Fediverse, don't conflate mastodon with Fedi overall. Mastodon is a company that's making changes to their own software and because of the sheer amount of people using it, the other devs of other software have to also add that stuff or be left behind. That's pretty bad.

But, I found Fediverse last year when Reddit boycotts were happening and ended up on Lemmy and then Mastodon. After that, I've pretty much been dabbling with different softwares on other instances just to see all the things.

Mmm, I see.. so the difference between Nostr and other things is that Nostr is a protocol and other things are software/apps/platforms? Do I get it right?

no...? Fediverse is just a nickname for things running on the ActivityPub protocol...

Matter of fact, I think Nostr only exists because someone saw the way ActivityPub puts servers ahead of the users and decided that it wasn't a good way to do things so they made Nostr.🤷‍♂️

Yeah I can't say ActivityPub hasn't influenced Nostr, but it wasn't a conscious influence at any point if I remember correctly. BitTorrent trackers, SSB and nostr:npub1c878wu04lfqcl5avfy3p5x83ndpvedaxv0dg7pxthakq3jqdyzcs2n8avm's Diagon Alley were more of a direct influence.

But there are some similarities indeed, and if one wants to use Nostr like ActitivyPub they can easily associate themselves with a community relay, let the relay hold their keys on their behalf and go from there. Ditto is another approach that's close to this.

More what I was asking is what is appeal of these communication platforms for you personally (as opposed to legacy soc networks)? What is the value of it for you?

well if you go to https://social.beaware.live/@BeAware

That's me. On my own site, all by myself. Yet, I am able to talk to you on Nostr via the Momostr.pink bridge AND I can talk to others on the 25,000+ Fediverse "sites".

Basically the point for me, is to be able to promote myself on my own site, but still be able to talk to others on other sites, without someone else being in control of who I can or cannot talk to. I am in control of me.

Nice ! So you have a cryptographic identity that you own and can take to different platforms and have an ability to self host it?

the easiest way to explain it, is like Nostr, but one relay holds and controls your keys instead of the relays distributing the keys across the network. This gives more power to the server owners who can ban users for any reason they want.

So relays are not distributing keys, it’s distributing notes. Keys are 100% your own property on Nostr
