Interesting. When I made my assumption about the L meaning layers, I had to think of the TCP/IP stack - and how I2P and Tor are overlay networks - being another layer ontop of TCP/IP. Possibly not the best analogy in this particular case - but I see now what you mean.

So much like Bitcoin, I have to first fund a Monero specific wallet. But I suppose there are services or ways to go between the two? I usually watch TechLore/NewOil's Surveilance Report on Youtube - and they do run a bumper about donations via Monero.

So say I had "some amount" in my Bitcoin wallet - would there be a way to go straight from BTC to Monero to send the guys a donation, or am I overlooking something?

Also thank you for your patience! :)

Yes, the TCP/IP stack and Tor/I2P analogy for L2s is a common way people conceptualize it.

I see you are from the privacy community. I listen to Surveillance Report every so often. My journey actually went from Bitcoin -> Bitcoin privacy world -> general foss/privacy community -> Monero

Yes you can directly onramp into Monero with something like LocalMonero or Bisq
