- the worst thing about matrix is that it's being developed by statist cucks

- the second worst thing is the terrible UX of every single app

- the third worst thing is that the main backend implementation is in python

I never trusted those fuckers

I don't understand why I get notifications in Element on Android and there's literally no way to find where it came from. It's buried somewhere 20 pages back in some chat with 6000 people in it.

matrix is built by people who dress like this

Lolz not a problem per se. I dress way worse

😂

Do you dress like this?

Lolol savage

My neighbor’s kid dresses like this 🤔

oof

one thing to wear it in private... another to think it looks good enough to post it somewhere..... so many indiana jones names I can come up with, but they are all too mean.

looks like a DOGE groyper

fixed

I hate matrix with a passion.

I'm starting to do the same (after we moved our whole dev community to it)

Not your whole dev team. Some rejected the idea of joining because of matrix.

Should I avoid learning python? Go? Rust?

No. Python has its uses, as do Go and Rust. Don’t build backends that need to scale in Python.

Correct

Thanks guys

Instagram disagrees. You can build scalable software in Python. In most cases, it's not the business logic that's the bottleneck.

Learn Python.

🙏🏼

yes, avoid becoming a programmer unless you like being unemployed

I love being unemployed. Having a boss is lame.

learn python. And train spotting and fixing mistakes in LLM answers

I hate being unemployed. I like being responsible and pulling my own weight.

Self-employment may be for you

Working in an organization increases communication and means that each individual can produce more and become more specialized. Independence and self employment are great ways to avoid corruption and immorality, but they come at the cost of lowering an individual's absolute potential.

I could go either way depending on the circumstances. I love both for different reasons.

Whatever floats your boat

Hard disagree

In any case, there is no good (open source, scalable, secure) alternative for community chat

Teams, Slack, Discord may have better UX but far worse defence against statist cucks.

You are self hosting your instance, right?

Yes. I know there's no alternative (yet). It was the worst setup experience I've had with any software for years.

Didn't attempt a manual setup - it does seem a bit monolithic, which was probably inevitable given the maturity of the product

They're building an entirely new version but it's nowhere near ready yet

Matrix isn't perfect but it's the best we have (happy to be proven wrong)

No mention of Zulip? 😮

Zulip looks interesting, will look into it

We've found matrix (with element or schildichat) to be rock solid though, honestly

How is the node self-hosting story for Matrix these days? Is easy to get one running?

If you use a provisioning system, such as start 9 or cloudron, yes - very easy

If you would attempt a manual install, it would appear (given nostr:nprofile1qqs9pk20ctv9srrg9vr354p03v0rrgsqkpggh2u45va77zz4mu5p6ccpzemhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejz7qgkwaehxw309a5xjum59ehx7um5wghxcctwvshszrnhwden5te0dehhxtnvdakz7qrxnfk experience) not straightforward

which is unsurprising given that matrix is an Enterprise solution, and this software category is rarely easy to self deploy (due to the wide range of server topologies it needs to support)

Simplex Chat is good. It has own drowbacks, but is already usable.

Simplex Chat is the best private messenger by a country mile

Got any recs besides Matrix? I've been trying to figure out a private chat server I can host but haven't decided on one yet

I don't think there's a real alternative right now

SimpleX

SimpleX is single device

Idk how easy the self-hosting is, but simplex chat is great

Yeah, they're a good alternative to telegram.

- actually the first worst thing is that it's practically impossible to move your identity from one home server to another. truly wtf if you come from nostr.
