kde and gnome are overcomplex softwares that cant be not-bugged, try a simple minimal wlroots based compositor like dwl

that's my point

already enough problems to add stupid wayland

like, can't restart using `alt-f2 r` for gnome

can't use barrier with gnome, and supporting both has broken barrier basically

because of all the energy going into wAyLaNd we can't have variable scale X to cope with our variable resolution LCDs or join monitors into single virtual monitors, they are flat strap trying to fix the bugs in both systems instead of being more chill and fixing bugs in the one system that already works fine

it's almost 20 years since wayland started and all it has done is diffuse open source development of linux GUI, hence, it is a dumpster fire

I agree with you, but I dont think lack of development on one front can be justified by some work happening on the other front.

I think all the scalability model of linux desktop is broken, you cant have a stable, clean and secure desktop environment by hiding to user the processes under the hood and adding layers over layers of complexity and GUIs.

I hack frequently with wayland and X and I think they either can be just so simple and so good, all the problems I find are in the unnecessary garbage on upper layers.

agreed, and the root problem is the object oriented model

a GUI is a process, you paint this and you mask that and you hide the other thing

the immediate mode model for GUI is the future IMO, we are just waiting for objects to die

you can already see this model rising with all the game engines, in fact i won't be surprised if someone cooks a game engine into a display manager back end

this is almost exactly what Apple did with Cocoa

is there an example in the wild of a gui that isn't a object model?

our own nostr:nprofile1qy88wumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmv9uq3xamnwvaz7tm0venxx6rpd9hzuur4vghszgrhwden5te0dehhxarj9ejkjmn4dej85ampdeaxjeewwdcxzcm99uq3yamnwvaz7tmwdaehgun4v5hxxmmd9uq32amnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwv3sk6atn9e5k7tcqyrhprfwl7sxpnf247s07g26g7q8xrry3yftz9t3hkmptkeahd38yjzwel5z is building Gossip with a Rust immediate mode GUI of the kind i am describing

of course like everything there has been a Go equivalent since 2016 or so and the original was in C, called `imgui`

it will be some time before someone builds a desktop out of it though, i think first an IMGUI based wayland or X (i wish the latter but i bet the former is already underway)

😂 ya but this bug is caused by kwin depending on Xwayland to startup.

so my standard advice applies: use arch, use wayland. anything still relying on talking to the X compat layer is ngmi. ive removed it from my system entirely so apps cant 'cheat' 🌊

lol, kde, ugh

gtk or death lol

i hate gnome too but at least it doesn't look like windows, and you can restart it when in X11 if it starts to bork

i'm still finding mos of the things i want to use don't work properly with wayland, the "transition" is a foreverwar like ipv6

i'll step across the gap when it's not a metro 2033 floating bricks hallucination

unfortunately totally bugged now but barrier soft-KVM does NOT work with wayland

xrandr of course doesn't work with wayland which means i can't fix the shitty gamma curve of my display properly

wayland also doesn't cope well with multiple monitors yet either, it's a joke, fine if you are in the target user preferences box they seem to be building for but i'm not, and i have been pissed off for almost a whole decade with everyone trying to make me use it when it doesn't work with my apps

multi display working better than ive ever had it.. i use wlroots/wdisplays

oh yeah, here's the thing

i only run amd hardware

that's the other problem with wayland is they are way focused on getting nvidia and intel working and nothing works on radeon

even though there is no such thing, in reality, as a closed source AMD driver anymore, but no, nvidia works better... with wayland... which is another element of my hostility here... intel and nvidia are far less friendly than amd, and amd hardware is cheaper and better designed now

it was absolutely astounding when i got this RX7800XT earlier this year how hard it was to find one goddamn live usb that actually got a screen running

ubuntu, with llvmpipe cpu rendering, and zorin OS 17, so i got zorin, and i even paid because fuck nvidia, fuck intel, and fuck mozilla and fuck them all

i will say that games are generally starting to be more reliable with wayland though, but there's a lotta man hours going into that

aw fuck, yeah. i got burned by amd long ago and just went pure intel since.. why is amd struggle so hard seems both w kernel and vid cards? they pissed linus off so they must be fuckin up somehow over and over..

that's my point

they open sourced their drivers 100%, earliest, their chips are simpler and more parallel, and they are around equal power utilization now

it just shows that all the money nvidia and intel are throwing at the linux foundation is being used to keep the competition behind a fence if you ask me, because on basis of open source philosophy and simplicity, it should be the best option

the way that it seems like all of silicon tech is against them makes me more sticky... they probably have less backdoors in their shit too, i mean, spooks are gonna put em where the most people are, right?

also, i always feel like i'm gonna break intel CPUs when i go to install them on a motherboard, their hardware is soft, with amd CPUs it feels industrial
