Or shame yourself into natural unselection. I think shame exists largely as a mechanism to kill off certain behaviors and to reduce the likelihood of procreation for people who have a strong tendency toward unfit behaviors. It also serves as a motivation to inspect yourself and dive deeper into what might be wrong about your behavior. Humans seem to have evolved it from previous feelings regarding danger and vulnerability.
In lobsters as with humans, serotonin emission in the brain is lowered when they have detected themselves to be of low status regarding strength and thereby also low chances of finding a mate. They reduce their likelihood of trying things as a means of adapting to their surroundings which have told them "you're weak." This is as much thought as they can put into things.
Humans have this exact same mechanism. It regulates such humans who have little to no alternative means of guaging whether they should engage in a behavior or take a certain risk. It does little to help people who have far greater wisdom and reasoning capacity at their disposal, and should generally be thrown away in favor of loving oneself and one's mental faculties and propensity for logical inspection, for anyone who possesses a greater tool at the time. One can usually deduce what needs addressing with less error and physical degradation than feelings of shame would incur, though the feelings are there as a backup which serve their best function when a person goes very far off base.
So true!! Society's ingrained tool is shame...guilt...punishment...
I love the word EVOLution, reading the first part of the word backwards. Thank you 🙏🏽💗🫂! So I just had to create this ⤵️
I would say 100% I've shamed myself into change
