It is caused by lack of calcium in the fruit, but the lack of calcium is caused by lack of water in the plant making it harder to transport the calcium from the roots to the fruit.

I have no idea if adding calcium to the soil helps but I suspect not.

The advice to organic gardeners here is to add bioavailable calcium to ALL nightshade family members. It also helps prevent hollow heart in potatoes.
