Isn't one factor in blossom end rot lack of calcium? I put ground eggshells in each hole I put a tomato plant in, then scatter additional shell around the plants as they grow. I have calcium-rich water, but apparently the calcium in that medium is not accessible to plants or humans.
Discussion
It is caused by lack of calcium in the fruit, but the lack of calcium is caused by lack of water in the plant making it harder to transport the calcium from the roots to the fruit.
I have no idea if adding calcium to the soil helps but I suspect not.
