With half of Portugal joining, but also because there's plenty of Dutch people here, it would be nice to introduce a language tag.

On the author side, clients should follow the keyboard language setting* and display a little flag in the corner which the user can adjust** if needed.

On the reader side, clients should let users choose between ignoring specific languages***, auto translating or showing a translate button.

Typically when I write in Dutch it's because the context is local and safe to ignore by the rest of the world.

* = or "AI" if you're into that

** = that's about the max effort I'm going to put in signaling the correct language

*** = maybe show a little flag to unfold the message - especially because the tag might be wrong, e.g. I don't always toggle the keyboard

* oops, I mean half of Portugese speakers, lol, i.e. 3% of Brazil

Good idea..

You are one of the few people I follow that posts in languages I don't understand and it's annoying. I would want my client to translate these posts as I'm still curious what's going on in your life where you live but to not straight understand it is annoying. That is the reason why I usually avoid posting in German or Spanish but then again, not adding to other language content is also annoying. I think with LLM translations we can remove the language barriers very soon.

I don't think that users can be bothered with picking a language and I don't switch my keyboard layout to switch between the three languages I commonly write in neither. An LLM should be able to guess right from context and message though.

The most a user could be bothered with is to ask which are the languages to expect by that user to avoid weird "translations" from exotic languages on those typo ridden short messages.

I think Amethyst auto translates if not the phones default language

I don't like it when websites and apps translate stuff without asking first. Also my phone is set to Dutch, but I don't want it to translate English.

And it can get even more complicated: I can read German reasonably well, but may occasionally want a translation. I can barely read French, but if it's just a bunch of swear words and baguette I don't need the translation.

I’m all for implementing more nips into my life
