Been thinking I need a better way to store copies of important documents than a USB stick. Stuff like passport, diploma, travel insurance if I ever buy that crap again... Are there any better ways to keep these copies long term and available while travelling?

I like using jobs as an excuse to "travel" - just pick a place and infest it for a year or two, hence the diploma. Its a shitty way to travel, but since companies at home won't even acknowledge my existence, it's all I got. Anyways, I always worry as my bag gets zapped by the x-ray thingy that the sticks will be toast.

We store it in our cloud. Privacy + lost device does not matter.

Self hosted? Hmm... I guess I'd need a paid thing...

You have multiple options:

1. Rent a server

2. Buy a homeserver

3. Pay a service (they could sell your data, so be careful)

All have different advantages and disadvantages you shall check for yourself which fits you better.

Maybe you can check mega.nz as a paid service. I think they have some privacy guarantees, but not sure.

Thanks. Mega is probably best option. Any server I take with will be no diff than a USB stick

It depends. Because, if you rent a server, you can easily do backups, probably even raid, and then a hard disk failure has a lower chance to cause you problems, and anyway you don't put these under the x-ray or so.

I would say, mega is a comfortable option, easy to setup, but you have to trust them.

If they're all small files, just your necessary backup, this would be good. You gotta keep it up to date, there's one single mobile app that syncs to it and it is closed source.

Only a couple of things that you actually need while you're traveling. Passport, travel insurance, other identification, health records. I leave hard copies with a trusted third party at home.
