Android has always been far superior to iOS. iOS is closed source. Apple is a walled garden that only allows certain people to play in their ecosystem. Android is open source. Android gives you freedom. Android allows you to leave Google's ecosystem whenever you want and install whatever you want on your device. Plus, the Google Pixel camera paired with Google's computational photography is the best on the market.

Because Apple has a closed eco system is the reason why I have never owned and will never own an Apple product.

But the walled garden is so beautifully trimmed and everything just works…

Just admitting you can't take care of your own garden.

Security vs convenience is always a trade off in tech. I 100% use apple with the family so I have less tech support phone calls. My time is scarcer than bitcoin.

Brother. My family is 100% Android. I don't play tech support with my parents, or my wife, or my kids. Again it's not 10 years ago. Don't believe Apple's BS marketing. Get a Pixel. πŸ«‚

It's not 10 years ago. You should try a Google Pixel phone. Don't use Samsung.

Samsungs bloatware was the worst.

Might fuck around with GrapheneOS.

Absolutely. Samsung has great hardware crippled by shitty software. Always has been this way.

Graphene is nice, though it's been several years since I've ran it.

I ran custom ROMs on the daily for the better part of a decade. I don't have time for that any longer.

Uses closed source firmware blobs. Could be a honey trap.

β€œSurprisingly, the deGoogled phone's first connection is to google.com. According to Google, the host android.clients.google.com serves the Google Play Store for periodical device registration, location, search for apps and many other functions. This is strange because we have a deGoogled phone without the Google Play Store. Later we found out that this request originates from microG, an open source re-implementation of Google's proprietary core libraries and applications.

Then it connects to connectivity.ecloud.global which, according to /e/OS, replaces Android's Google server connectivity check connectivitycheck.gstatic.com.

…

β€œ

GrapheneOS has addressed this and called microG out. But still they are uses Google hardware and firmware. As far as I know, no devices can be trusted, even with the most privacy focussed OS running on them.

We need truly open source mobile hardware and firmware. People don’t understand that even raspberry pis aren’t really open source, again using closed source firmware blobs.

So do we hide in the noise?

Seems like a rational option to me. Depends on your personal security model

Any specific pixel version you recommend? Does it matter?

Apple's shittiness doesn't excuse Google's shittiness. They both should be held to task for their consumer unfriendly practices.

Examples?

If BigCo controls the AppStore you are on rug territory. Doesn’t matter which company.

Good thing I can install any .apk from any source I want to with android...

Yes, that’s great and it works.

For now app store is the floodgates to the masses, and I don’t know of an alternative.

My man, there are like more alternative app stores for android than I can count on one hand. I disagree. It's just as easy to google an app you want as it is to search the same app on the play store. If an end user wants an app, all they need to is search for it. Where they search is irrelevant.

For you, and many on nostr its fine. For the average twitter, fb user I think you are asking too much.

An opportunity of nostr is making it so easy to install, receive zaps, zap that user does not know or care about what lightning or zaps are.

It will get reinstated.

It should never have been taken down. Damus will end up having a workaround too.

Bullying is bullying and apple and Google both do it.

Pic taken with a Pixel phone.

I loved apple and used the ecosystem for a long time. Maybe it's time to move on to a free android. But I will continue to use mac unequivocally

DGAF, phone is a phone. If something isn’t compelling enough for me to use it on PC then it’s a sheer waste. Apple and I’ll always be superior than anything google, android, Samsung or whatever other BS. Niggas is bitching over the App Store like fortnite mfs was 5 years ago lol

This is the typical out of touch Apple banboi response that illics disgust from the rest.of.us with brains.

Apple is a shitcoin.

Google is not much better.

At least Android hardware is usable outside their ecosystem and you can do more shit even if you don't go that route.

I have 5 pcs if I want to do something outside of apple ecosystem lmao yall jockin sucks too hard today fam 🀣🀣🀣🀣

I honestly don't even know what you just said, bro.

We need a Gen Z translator. nostr:npub1hte85nxymfyez0nlmmxf287nh9cujfuetxhk9vptwcdqg0pn8pxqxasw3d can you help out?

The word jockin been used since the 80s my guy, not some gen z shit. Although you gotta be a sheltered white person to probably not know it. 🀑

I'm a 43 year old white dude and live in Central PA. I've never heard anyone say jockin before. Our culture here is redneck 🀣 Sorry I haven't heard that slang before.

Such is my point.

I’ve heard it but fortunately never caught myself using it.

So, it's mocking, but with a j?

Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

The only time I’ve heard it was in the song Boyz-N-The-Hood by Eazy-E so I can confirm it has been around since the 80s

I don’t know what it means though 🀣

Get off apples dick and stop jockin on shit just because everyone else is lmao bunch of dumbass sheep and attention seeking whores on here. β€œI honestly don’t even know what you said bro” cool gay nonchalant white dude response. Y’all sounds like a bunch of broke bitches complaining all the time.

Who's this clown? πŸ˜‚

Idk you the one following me and on my dick fam

Corrected, and no...nobody is on your dick.

Literally, no one.

Then why you replying so harddd, put that nonchalant white dude front back on fam. 🀣🀣🀣

I'm not your fault, I'm just laughing at you defending apple so hard, fanboi.

I’m not defending apple im just laughing at the fact white suburban dudes always feel the need to throw up picket signs and protest over dumb lil bullshit and act like they cool or hard because they are. Bro no one give a fuck that gots money. But pls fam march on and act edgy it’s in your nature 🀣🀣

Did you just simultaneously talk shit about suburban dwellers and people with money?

1. Why do you keep bringing up race? Are you a racist?

2. Who cares about money, this discussion is about values, censorship and corporate controls. Your disregard for those values makes me question why you are here.

3. Yes people are bagging on apple for making an absolutely shit decision, and if you don't agree it's because you care more about the social status symbol in your hand than you dok about the protocol.

Carry on shitcoining. Just don't be mad when we laugh.

Remember you injected yourself into this discussion. πŸ˜‰

🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣

Do you need a hug brother? No one is coming at you. I'm sorry we made a joke about how you were talking. Absolutely zero offense was meant. I said we needed a Gen Z translator all in good fun. If you didn't think it was funny I'm sorry. Seriously. πŸ«‚πŸ€™πŸ»πŸ’œ

Lmao you cliche as fuck 🀣🀣🀣

πŸ«‚

Apple is Ethereum ... few Bitcoiner understand this!

Exactly what I said too, but Android is not as freefom as they think at first sight. It officially does not want you to leave the Google ecosystem. There must be some "trick" to use a tons of apps you can find on the Google Play store. Even if yku want to be free from Google GFS, or if you don't want to use Gmail, and/or you don't want to be tracked by anyone. But it is possible, my phone is also "degoogled". You can find these kind of smart phone on the market, with all necessary things preinstalled. Therefore you can use them without any apriori IT knowledge.

@DerekRoss - IMHO if you want to develop any Android app (instead of supporting and the Apple universe more and more), it could be FOSS, without GFS, AWS and so on, and could be available on F-Droid. I mean not just #nostr related.apps.Am I right or not? πŸ™‚

Yes. Apps can be installed from anywhere if you go into your settings and allow apps to be installed from external locations. It's really easy and is standard practice. Always has been. So, install your F-Droid store or just go to GitHub, whenever. Just make sure you know what you're installing. You don't want to get malware.

I'm sure the apps developed by you for Android, definitely won't contain any "unwanted" code 😁😁 But you are right, I forgot to mention that be careful. Om the other hand many of the alternative Android app stores examine the uploaded apps before it will be public (unfortunately the Aptoide is not so secure: it always want to get "root" rights/privileges, I don't know why...)

I'm an Android dev since day two (2009) and prefer it over Apple but Google is also going for more wallet garden.

It used to be such that developers signed their apps with a key that never was shared with Google. Then they let developers opt in to sharing that key with them and now I think, to distribute on Google Play, new developers don't get their hands on the signing key.

The consequence is that if you publish on Google Play and with direct downloads from your website, you have to sign with different keys or risk to not be able to provide updates if Google gives you the boot.

You're 100% correct. I am happy that Google has tightened their grasp a bit for Google Play. This gives users a higher quality and more secure app store. But thankfully the fact still remains that if you want the choice to play outside the Google ecosystem, you can.

Legacy apps where the devs have the keys certainly have an easier time migrating off Play Store. They "only" have to convince their clients to enable "untrusted" sources and download updates from their websites. Users can then update, knowing the binary was signed by the same devs as before.

New apps essentially have to start from zero and tell their users to install that other app if they loose their Google Developer account. Clients cannot upgrade from the Play Store version to the free version. They have to either delete the Play Store version before installing the free version or the provider has to provide the free version under a completely different app ID.

And then there is the issue with Google forcing devs to use their APIs for push notifications for example.

And they have good excuses for both but these excuses assume that Google never is evil and is available for all Android users.

We need a truly open mobile platform, from the hardware up

And still every company producing android phones fails to deliver appealing small phones, which rules android out (at least for me πŸ™)
