I talked to peter in amsterdam about this. He thinks nostr would be better on a blockchain. Was surprised to hear him say that considering how bad of an idea it is.

Peter might be smart, but he’s full of stupid takes

it needs a consensus algorithm but it doesn't have to be very strongly consistent, it needs to be available and singular (partition resistant). merkle dags of some flavour would go a long way towards this.

but who tf is peter todd anyway? why would i listen to him when he probably barely even understands the first principles of distributed systems?

Consensus would make nostr much worse. Yes we have an npub->relay discovery issue, but making nostr globally consistent provides little value and is expensive and slow.

Nostr is minimalist like podcasting and that’s worked out pretty well.

And NIP-03, we also have NIP-03
