I have some contacts in Russia that work as asset managers and financial analysts. So after the war broke out they were emailing me like, “Well, uh, that’s awkward. But anyway here are some details of what’s happening internally in Russia in terms of the financial system using CNY more and USD less, and other financial changes. Hopefully these are helpful.”

So I was like “thanks guys, let’s stay in touch. Stay safe!”

I had a Russian engineer on my team. He was like, “This is dumb.” And we were like, “Yep.” And then shortly after that we had to let him go because we weren’t allowed to pay him anymore.

That's terrible, what about zaping him?

We’re owned by a large public corporation. Very strict on who we employ and how we pay them.

I see, many Russians living in Europe like for the last 20 years had bank account blocked or unilateral closed after this war.

All heil the state, bestower of permissions and knower of what is best!

Well said, comrade 🫡

Russia is estimated to spend something like 10% to 20% of their GDP on war. Paying him would be making meaningful contribution to an attempted genocide, as you'd be supplying foreign currency to the Russian economy.

The only ethical thing to do is cut ties and tell him to get out of Russia. Sucks. But war at this scale forces people to take sides and make hard decisions.

Cool. Now do America.

after seeing violence on human bodies one might change perspectives

Это моя родина

this slow waiting of WW3 is killing more people than anything. Let's do it already so we can continue our lives. lol

Indeed the lack of hope is terrible.

I can't read the quoted event on amethyst

If you grab the note id you can view it on njump, which is a pretty cool site

Same here. Added some more default relays but still not showing up. Full disclosure, I'm a lurking newbie to NOSTR.

“The flower of youth die in trenches while old men dine in comfort”

Everyday people have no problems with each other. It’s the octogenarian politicians across the globe that eff everything up

this is general abstract words. don't have nothing against them. But what do you do if 500 meters from you exploded 900 kg ballistic missile from country which invaded your country? will you say this same mantra to foreign soldiers or you will defend your home?

That's what the Donbasniks said in 2014, after they rejected a coup and got hit with a "Counter Terrorist Operation".

I wish Western governments had used their leverage then for peace and trust-building, instead of treachery and arms sales.

But "the leopard doesn't change his spots" and Ukrainians are paying most of the price...

We can talk about history of this conflict if you want. But there are a lots of details and you have to spend a lot of time to learn them. I'm not sure you want this.

So. So called "Donbasniks" started coup against ukraine in april 2014. They claimed to be local fighters of the Donetsk People's Republic, but were actually Russian Armed Forces 'volunteers' under the command of Russian GRU colonel Igor Girkin ('Strelkov').

The same dude, Strelkov, participated in Crimea annexation. Later he said openly and bravery about all this. You can find interview with him in russian.

Probably all of Ukraine saw the video from Slavyansk in 2014 when one of the soldiers said the word [parebrik] (border). I, for example, heard this word for the first time, although I speak russian. It turned out that this word originated and used in the Leningrad region.

that is the video

btw, isn't this is strange that "Donbasniks" rebels equipped like fucking professional marines?

Of course not. I would fight back to defend my home and family, and most sane people would as well.

My post was speaking in generalities. For the most part I believe that people are good and just want to love and be loved by family and friends.

Left to their own devices, most people choose peace. But politicians and those in power put them in positions to fight those they otherwise wouldn’t fight

> Of course not. I would fight back to defend my home and family, and most sane people would as well.

nice to hear that.

Russia and China ... two wrongs don't make a right

Yeah I was glad to have a stake in Lukoil for my long term holdings.... but silly politicians always looking to do the WAR thing....

hopefully the oil companies can get back to fueling productivity all over the earth without governments being so violent & overbearing

Good for you. Keep talking.

—In response to the reposted note:

If we’re talking to one another, we’re likely not actually enemies. Nationalism is great until it’s not. As a person who loves to travel and has traveled a ton across cultures, what we are doing by communicating person to person around the world is more generative of peace than accommodating to war.

By continuing to work their jobs and pay their taxes those those asset managers and analysists are contributing thousands of dollars a year towards the Russian state, and thus to their attempt at genociding Ukraine. An estimated 10% or more of the entire Russian GDP is being spent on the invasion. You simply can't escape supporting it if you continue to stay in Russia and work. And with those kinds of careers, they probably do have a real choice and could leave Russia like so many others have.

Unless your contacts are doing something useful to stop the war, like sabotage or espionage, they should be thought of as criminals. And they – and the Russian economy in general – should be considered valid military targets. It would be completely ok for Ukraine to send a few drones to their offices to fuck up the financial side of the Russian economy.

War is shit. But sometimes you are forced to take a side, and forced to make hard choices. Don't chose evil.

This is what Peter Todd had to say about this. What a nice guy 🤦‍♂️

He has Ukrainian roots and a radical position against Russia.

What a marasmatic world. I am Ukrainian, I lived in Kharkiv quietly until February 24, 22. That morning I heard explosions in my city. We started to defend the country, because what choice did we have? I had to leave the city, my wife lost her brother in the war, my boss lost his country private house. And now what? You're here suggesting to zap russians who lost their accounts in Europe. You think Ukrainians are nationalists because for some strange reason(!?) we don't like russians.

I'm saying this no to Lyn but to comments

Are Russian adhering to #nostr ?

sure, why not
