So, event deletions are up to each relay right? So hypothetically you could have a relay that honors all deletions, and only post to a single relay? 🤔 #asknostr #plebchain

I’m thinking in terms of platform adoption for those who may be uncomfortable with the no delete thing, I could see it being a big barrier to entry for many

Yup exactly. Or a set of relays that honor deletion.

Do you know which ones are better for this currently? 🤔

Off the top of my head no. But event deletion is NIP-09. In amethyst you can click on the relays to see what they support.

For example my relay running nostream does.

Thank you! This is helpful 🙏☺️🫶

Happy to help. 😁

Mabey you could curate a list of relays that support deletion for new users worried about it?

The no delete thing is one of the dumbest nostr moves yet, and that relay admins can just delete things as they wish really highlights that. Is it a protocol decision already or do some clients just prevent deletes?

It's still a client thing. But if there is significant time passed and your followers have pushed the notes to other relays that don't support delete then it's not going to matter which ones you choose.

That “barrier” you’re experiencing is called shame.

Lol. As if the internet is ever deleted. Everything you post on the other apps is archived.

Everything you show the world will be forever discoverable. You’ve already crossed that rubicon.

🎯

This was one of the coolest lessons that using nostr taught me

Yes!

I don't care what others think.

I want a button that deletes all my content from relays in a single tap. 🤣

(To bad it'll never actually work)

🤣

This is even more complicated. There is no guarantee that the request will make it to the relay. So you might need to send it multiple times. If your post got ever broadcasted on other relays you will have to ask those as well. (effectively asking every single relay on the planet)

The last thing is, how they honor it. Do they unrecoverably delete the event, delete it only from the production database, flag is as hidden in the database... There is no way to tell.

Since pictures and media are not hosted directly on Nostr, you could pull the media behind the link but native #nostr events are kind of a Schrödinger’s cat.

Relays may purge notes for various reasons, or they may archive forever and ignore delete requests.

Both should be assumed simultaneously.

All it takes is one broadcast to a relay that doesn't support delete and it is out there. Hopefully there are "Nostr archive-wayback machine" relays in the future storing all notes, regardless of delete request. I see lack of delete as a feature, not a bug.

If it’s pictures you’re referring to, you could host them on your own server or a Dropbox. When you want to delete the post, just delete the picture from your server

That wouldn’t stop anyone from saving it and/or posting it again though. I just assume whatever I put online is “open-source-able” by anyone

In a distributed system there are many copies of notes across many relays. It will be difficult for relays to come to consensus. Aka bitcoin wars in the past are an example.

You can post too only one single relay and that relay can honor deletions. However, I can boost or broadcast your note to infinite amounts of relays. Those may not honor deletions. Which is why we joke and say that you can't delete anything.

That makes sense, thank you ☺️🫶

Shh.. 🤫 the European council might hear you, GDPR yo!

can one make access control at content level?

Yes, but deletion is one of the tradeoffs for censorship resistance, you only get to pick one.

In long terms, the pioneers will get their pretty tail stuck until they learn to balance without regret.

And then it's their job to advice the newcomers, just like IRL.

Honestly I feel it's more normal to not be able to undo what you have done.

Otherwise you'd just be truly stuck. *shrug*
