I wanna follow Japanese nostriches, but the air replies often spam my feed. Anyone have any solutions to this? Haha do you think we could convince them to stop air replying and reply to a note like a normal person? 😂

What is an air reply?

Japanese nostriches always post a top level note even when replying to someone. Also, they don’t use mentions. They talked about it at Nostrasia. I guess it’s a cultural thing. I really don’t get it.

Ah, I've heard of that. Very strange.

It's like a subtweet. I can see that being fun.

It’s exactly a subtweet, but they consider it polite and only communicate like that. Hilarious cause when we subtweet it’s usually to dunk on someone. 😂

I hardly dare ask, but… da heck is an air reply?

Ok! Where I live, that’s called lurking 😂

Have heard of it and seen it talked about here a bunch, but never knew what it was, or looked it up.

I think it’s different. They actually communicate with each other like this on purpose. IIRC it’s so the person they’re responding to doesn’t feel obligated to respond back. The 2nd order effect is they spam everyone else’s feed though.

Follow enough Japanese nostriches and you won't face this (hope you have translation). You'll know mostly which notes is referring to what

The thing about Japanese TL is there are 2-3 topics running concurrently, and those change every hour or so.

Even if I knew what the conversations were about, it would still make my main feed extremely noisy. Replies don’t show up in the main feed (in Damus) which make the main feed manageable. When every reply appears as a top level note, it gets too noisy. That’s one problem with having no algo for the main feed.

Ah, I misunderstood what you were trying to do. In that case, I suppose lists is an option (though I'm most sure it's available on Damus yet, on Amethyst you can see home TL basis regular follows or specific lists).

The nature of Japanese TL is that it's a lot of posts, so can't change that 😅

I think once your community grows you might change your mind on air replies. I have no idea how you will be able to manage following 1000+ people all posting only air replies. 😂

Maybe...I've often wondered what Japanese Twitter feed feels like🤔🤔
