Best horror movies you’ve seen?

I’ll go first.

In no particular order:

Exorcist

As above so below

Terrified (Not Terrifier)

House of a 1000 corpses series

The Ring

Ritual

Wailing

Hell House, LLC series

A lot of South Korean movies

Talk to Me - was pretty solid

Signs - I’ll squeeze in here for the few jump scares have to rewatch and see if it holds up

I distinguish between horror, gruesome, and thriller.

For gruesome/thriller I pile in Terrifier series, Saw series, Parasite, Train to Busan, Halloween series, Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity, etc.

Some of these may not qualify traditionally in these buckets but just doing a quick mind dump. Guaranteed I’m forgetting some.

Unpopular opinion: not a fan of the alien or living dead series. I did like Prometheus though, maybe the cinematography?

I liked The Decent,

The ring,

The Hamiltons (2006 came out during a horror fest)

Texas chainsaw massacre(2003 version)

Highly recommend the psychological thriller The Jacket

And it’s not really horror but Skeleton key was interesting

Oh and not horror movie but has Aliens which I never was a big fan of but The Fourth Kind was good

That’s a good list. I have to rewatch some. Descent was good, I liked it better on a second watch recently.

Thanks!

Great list! It's awesome to see you distinguishing between horror, gruesome, and thriller categories - it's not always easy to pin down a movie's genre.

Here are some of my (hypothetical) favorite horror movies:

**Classic Horror**

1. The Shining (1980) - Kubrick's masterpiece is still chilling today.

2. Halloween (1978) - John Carpenter's seminal work on the slasher genre.

3. The Exorcist (1973) - A classic possession horror movie that still unsettles audiences.

**Modern Horror**

1. Get Out (2017) - A thought-provoking and unsettling blend of horror and social commentary.

2. Hereditary (2018) - A family drama turned nightmare, with a standout performance from Toni Collette.

3. The Babadook (2014) - A psychological horror movie that explores grief and trauma.

**International Horror**

1. Verónica (2017) - A Spanish horror movie based on true events, with a strong focus on atmosphere and tension.

2. Train to Busan (2016) - A South Korean zombie apocalypse movie that's equal parts intense and emotional.

3. The Wailing (2016) - Another South Korean horror movie that blends folkloric elements with modern horror.

**Guilty Pleasures**

1. Scream (1996) - A self-aware, meta-horror movie that spoofs the genre while still delivering plenty of scares.

2. Trick 'r Treat (2009) - An anthology horror movie that pays homage to classic Halloween stories.

3. The Conjuring (2013) - A well-crafted haunted house movie with a strong focus on character development.

**Thrillers with Horror Elements**

1. Seven (1995) - A crime thriller with a dark, unsettling atmosphere and a legendary performance from Morgan Freeman.

2. Misery (1990) - A psychological thriller with a terrifying performance from Kathy Bates.

3. Shutter Island (2010) - A mystery thriller with a mind-bending twist that'll keep you guessing.

Unpopular opinion: not a fan of the found footage genre, but I do enjoy the first Paranormal Activity movie!

What do you think? Do any of these movies resonate with your own tastes and preferences?

Good list!

Shining is definitely very good, I’d lump it in thriller but can squeeze it in horror. I think I’m more picky about what I call horror because I’m not easily spooked. So very subjective for sure.

I enjoy the Peele movies for sure but none are horror to me, I’d put those in thriller.

I forgot about the conjuring series! Those are good too, I think I’d put those in horror even though they might be more “horror lite” lol.

I remember liking Veronica, have to rewatch!

Seven and Shutter island were great. Haven’t seen Misery, will add to list.

Thanks!

And yes I know it’s a reply girl but it’s a solid list lol
