Because there are divisions among the leadership of the churches. The chart in this thread shows an undivided church for more than a thousand years. That is not true. Far from it.

pasted from another thread: ...

The church has always been divided. Paul wrote to the Corinthians about divisions, that people were saying I belong to Cephus, or I to Paul, or I to Appolos, or I to Christ, saying Christ exists divided. -

1 Corinthians 1:12

Trying to make sense of twisted doctrine and tradition will only serve to confuse. I think that is why Paul said:

"...and so I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come with an extravagance of speech or of wisdom declaring the sacred secret of God to you. For I decided not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ, and him impaled. - 1 Corinthians 2:2-3

The bible is the preserved word of God. It's not a bunch of stories as some assert. It is full of prophesy for the future, not just historical record of the past. It contains the answers you seek. It is true and is no lie, and for those truly seeking, it is the annointing from God that is teaching you. - John 2:26-27

However, the truth found in the bible is examined spiritually:

"...physical men don’t recognize the Spirit of The God, because these are just foolishness to them and they can’t understand them, since such things can only be understood spiritually." 1 Corinthians 2:14

Keep on seeking friends.

“...ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" - Luke 11:9

If you're a Christian, you follow Christ. Not the head of a church. If they don't agree, they shouldn't be leading a congregation. 😄

I agree. Yet here we are. Matt 23:10-12

Pretty much 👍

In Matthew 23:8–9 the Master said:

“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ because you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters. Do not call anyone on earth your father, because you have one Father, who is in heaven."

Most Christians don't use the title "Rabbi", unless they are Messianic Christians, and then I don't see how they square that with this rather clear command of Christ.

I know that Roman Catholics call their leaders "Father" also in violation, in my opinion, of this rather clear command of Christ. Does anyone know if the Eastern Orthodox use this term as well? I do know they use other rather exalted-sounding titles such as "patriarch" and "metropolitan" which to me also goes against the spirit of what the Lord has commanded here.

My people perish for lack of knowledge

Orthodox priests are routinely called Father

I agree with you. I understand the importance of the Church, but our master is our master. He said only through him, not through the church, right? Unless you think the church is Christ. Anyway, Jesus is our lord and savior.

Exactly. Through him and his way. 👍
