I'd like to continue working on Iris & Nostr, but would need funding soon. Any grants available?

Iris is MIT licensed and will always remain free and open source. It's available for web, Android, iOS and desktop. Works just fine on the Tor Browser.

Iris design goals have been speed, reliability and ease of use. I want to work on these further. I want to add public and private custom feeds, including user lists, content filters and different ranking algorithms. We also need group chats and better DM privacy.

I want to add more p2p capability to clients. Syncing of events over WebRTC, local area network or even bluetooth. Iris already supports Webtorrent, but the interface needs improvement. I think we should actually have nostr:file urls for binary files and transmit them over relays or direct p2p.

I'll try to get Iris subscriptions done soon, but it will probably be some time until it's sustainable income.

There's so much cool stuff to be done that I don't want to go back to fiat mining πŸ˜„

Perhaps a voluntary donation goal indicated by a progress bar, where users can zap, or send on-chain, to support decelopment.

A mini #zapathon ☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️ appears

Throw up a patreon or an onlyfans.

Wasnt able to zap you more that 1K sats but sent you a transaction to your profile. Keep building.

Really glad to see Iris development continuing. We need a diversity of nostr clients to keep the ecosystem healthy.

Apply to open sats

we plan to start providing nostr grants through opensats shortly

Well there is no one more deserving than Martti

And that’s pre nostr

This is the way 🫑

We are at warp factor 7 outside the system. Tremendous time to be alive.

So you’re saying I can donate to Nostr development in a tax deductible way? I’m going to need to buy some darker sunglasses if the future is getting that bright

Definitely deserve ⚑️

Although an account system may not pay a salary, it will likely cover costs+. You could also charge for premium uploads (size, quality, acct. access), glad to work with you on anything.

Zap the devs. Keep dirty VC funding away from Nostr for as long as possible.

#[0]

Specific VCs are dirty... funding itself is neutral. We had some amazing VCs at #nostrica and I'm very hopeful that some of them will manage to provide funding... but more help devs build up sustainable venture around their Nostr code contributions.

πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½

I met some of these VCs at nostrica.

Do you think there is a misalignment of incentives between VCs (person or funding) and an open permission-less ecosystem?

VCs want to capture and dominate market as it is the best way to make profits, which is a centralization risk.

On the other hand, Nostr yearns to have community-driven governance with a much lower time preference than typical VC cycles.

I’m not saying VCs are dirty. The ones I met were really awesome people. I’m saying there may be forces out of their control that they have to succumb to that puts the openness of Nostr at risk.

Curious to hear your thoughts on this.

VC is profit driven, though some of them mentioned to me that they have quota only for non profitable invest, let’s say, for reputation. If I am a VC I don’t see any business model via a client because zap for developer will always be more efficient to make a better product so finally VC backup client won’t win and zap for developer client will have better experience. But other things based on nostr may worth to invest like private relay infrastructure.

Yeah, that's also a big consideration with Nostr... it's not a protocol that's easy to monetize (different from Bitcoin in that regard).

That said, most of VCs that are already in Nostr are very ideological... I know that some of them are already funding developers simply to help sustain contributions; which is amazing.

I can think of one way a VC can capture the client market:

Design a client that provides additional closed API that exists outside of the Nostr protocol (better ML, UX, privacy, or whatever) and users will flock to that platform. Because of the closed features this erodes the open nostr protocol.

#[7] warns us of this and similar risks in his excellent talks and interviews from Nostrica

Good point. πŸ«‚ This is why you make the big sats. πŸ€™πŸ»

Zapped ⚑️

Thank you for your service. 🫑

Zapped!

I think subscriptions and client specific paid features are the most viable path forward.

Open Collective? Maybe for a bunch of these nostr projects which aren’t big enough for a company but to big to be an unpaid side project.

I like the decentralization of small independent projects... and there is enough of goodwill, I'm optimistic this will be solved soon!

Not ready yet, but I'm slowly grinding it out

I think the Nostr economy is based on getting a percentage of the commission from each user to zap⚑️. Nostr developers build good products, more people use Nostr, people zap⚑️ People and posts here, developers get a portion of the sats commission reward from zap, and then go on to develop products and provide services. This is a virtuous economic cycle. The more people use it, the more rewards there are, and with good rewards you can build a better product.

Value creates value, and happily Will says this is already on Nostr's roadmap.

I’m super curious about the subscription plans. Have you sketched it out somewhere?

My notes are dogs breakfast, however I have a few people now interested in collaborating on a NIP for better client app subscription visibility and management (with a prepaid credit option too).

I think this NIP (or similar) and client app adoption can really take payments to the next level. Pay for relays, pay for client apps, pay for hosting services, pay for translation, etc. Add in budgeting, upcoming and usage data - and you have a solid interface. #[5] is already doing something similar for Snort by storing subscription data encrypted in events.

We need a Nostr dev economy, or in a year, many of the best minds/relays/services will have to spend less time and personal funds.

Thank you for being a rockstar developer, Martti! You've created a beautiful client and I'm sure sustainability will be figured out soon... in the meantime will keep rounding up your donations to 2.1M sats πŸ˜‰

Ask and you shall receive πŸ™πŸ½

zapped! :) iris is the shiz, good work and i hope to see it improve further

This is great!

You should add the option to send a percentage of every zap to Iris dev, like how Snort did it!

like, boost and zap the dev!!!!

@jack offers a nice bounty for a nostr-based github equivalent. That would benefit everybody.

Thank you for the overwhelming support again, Nostr folks are the best! So many sats, much appreciated. I have applied to OpenSats and also got other good suggestions. Btw, please don't feel obligated to send me your last sats β€” I'm hoping to reach open source dev funds and other big stackers πŸ™‚

I was building nostr over p2p/webrtc before nostr was released.

In today's hostile NAT-environments and without holepunching webrtc is glitchy at best;

Without a decentralized kernel fit for mobile devices; you might as well try compile strfry to wasm and run a full relay in browser.

I support your journey, feel free to pick my brain. πŸ™
