What's the etiquette around NIP-05 verification.

I think it's fine. People can use it if they want, it's a way to show support.
I don't think that's spam. They're obviously earning it by meeting whatever is defining the "top" criteria. If they were ranked lower in placement due to not using it or something, that would be a bit disingenuous.
Have you heard of Odysee? They are a pretty solid uncensorable platform as well.
