A federated sidechain model where you can run your own node to verify everything, you can lock in your own BTC, gain some privacy benefits, & have access to LN on & off ramps is not a bad setup. I think it's generally underrated.

All custodial solutions have risk. Including self custody. Lots of people have rugged themselves. Understand the tools you have at your disposal and the risks involved with using them.
