I guess it’s because you can see constant, methodical progress by machinery and know you are not being held up by the actions of other people.

Some serious UX insight here.

Perfect summarization of why progress bars are so ubiquitous.

Interesting to me is how spinning wheels or flowing dots ( . . . ) never give the same satisfaction for me, since they are indeterminate.
