Seeing posts from others about artists leaving IG for a platform called Cara because they’re worried about Meta scraping their art for its AI. My nephew is a professional illustrator/animator and said he and several of his colleagues are doing the same thing, because apparently Cara is geared toward the artist community. I hope we see apps on #nostr specializing for artists, musicians, and creators of all types, to connect with their audiences and easily publish and monetize their work.

💯 what is the most “visual” client?

There aren’t any that are entirely great at it. Amethyst has a dedicated video feed. Nostur and Nostrudel with dedicated image gallery feeds. But I wouldn’t say any of them are really geared towards being visual. There needs to be more focus on that.

Someone built an Instagram clone called Nostrgram once, but I think it’s dead now.

I was gunna say...

Just rebuild IG ontop of Nostr....

Sure, I’ll just ping my good friend nostr:npub1zgpanpumxemdjllsp74jew5vxr6slgwpajpuv3fpw4eefd25y0zs8gjw87 to get right on that.

Oh, it can't be done in a day? 🤣

he disappeared off nostr

RIP nostrgram

Use lumina or slidestr

My Instagram is almost just artists and artists friends following. I’ve got to nail this!

This. We need galleries.

💯

It’s strange we don’t have a client that doesn’t only shows images yet.

No short or long form notes.

Corny Chat Slide Sets is a list that is a user curated list of URLs to images for display. It could be repurposed for a gallery collection, or album.

🤯🤯🤯🤯 I never thought about using the slides for that !!

Proposed profile galleries several times and people loved the idea but got nowhere

Me too. I still have hope

💯

Cara is going to be really interesting to follow. Looks like they are building an artist community where one of the core features being promoted is the detection and blocking of AI generated art. The quality on display there is amazing so far 🍿

Of course, nothing will stop AI from harvesting all the media on NOSTR as well.

As an artist with similar concerns- ultimately I don’t think there is anything we can do. Bots will [or already have] scrape the entire web.

Just need to innovate and use the news tools available to us.

I feel for these artists but ultimately they’re not going to escape AI picking up their art with any method short of not displaying it at all. Unless they can manage to keep getting fulfillment via their current type of art despite AI copying it, I believe the best thing they can do is pivot their efforts to a “higher layer,” more complex form of art like game development.

I've seen the hell of a lot of platforms like this over years and most of them render themselves useless cause it's just artists looking at artists and no economic potential gets created. Behance and Dribble works because they are geared towards high end of the industry. Etsy works cause it's a marketplace first and caters to buyers more than to sellers.

Etsy sucks. The only people making money on Etsy, is Etsy.

Sure, sucks for artists but survives as platform as oppose to platforms that don’t survive at all

The only problem with this is that an open platform like #Nostr makes it even more likely that they will be used to train not only META’s Ai but also hundreds of other models.

Whatever platform they use would need to be closed with no API access or KYC with serious limits as to who can use it and how.

I wish a change this bug wasn’t hitting them at 1,000 Mph, but I think it’s an impossible battle to fight. Best they can do is probably move to an open platform where they can sell directly, and get rewarded by their fans, and maybe only post lower resolution versions or only a portion of their content and leave the rest for buyers or patrons.

In other words, I think the secret isn’t closed platforms & trying to lock down access to everything, but having as many ways as possible for users to easily & quickly reward creators.

That’s where my thinking goes with it too. AI is a freight train barreling down the tracks towards us in an enclosed tunnel 😅 People still value other people and genuine talent and work, so empowering artists and their audiences to connect and engage with each other seems like a valuable area to focus development, and nostr and bitcoin are well suited for this.

Nostr is all public data and content can be scraped for free here. We may not have solutions for images, but I hope we have tools and services some day soon for more creative people to utilize.

Yea for sure the public nature of nostr doesn’t help at all with that issue 😂 Where I am think nostr can excel for artists is in the ability to connect human to human with audiences/fans/patrons across various apps. It’s already possible on nostr but it’s clunky and none of the existing apps are specifically geared toward publishing and showcasing visual art. Video content is also confusing in terms of how to publish it. I believe it will absolutely get better though.

All platforms eventually screw their loyal user base. It’s just a matter of time with this one too. But, worth investigating what makes cara special.

💯

If I can be a photographer, producing daily stock for Getty images, or Shutterstock, but there was a way to monetize (in BTC) I’d immediately migrate

What do you think it would take for this to be viable?

It’s not enough to just build a stock agency, because many exist.

I have options of where to send my photos, but I sent them where I think that they will be licensed most frequently for editorial use, and that is almost always Getty.

They implemented a subscription based model for blogs, as well as big and small media companies who produce content daily and needs stock images to go with their words, it was bad for photographers across the industry because instead of getting a licensing fee, which was usually in the dollars, we now get subscription licensing fees, which are often pennies… but they do sell more frequently, so they effectively killed their competition by valuing all the work, and now they subsequently have the biggest distribution platform.

As a result of Getty photos with consistently great daily placement in print and online, they are also able to negotiate unlimited access when covering just about every event…

I can’t imagine another stock agency competing, but maybe a tech forward based company like Shutterstock could slowly get content creators to migrate over by incentivizing them in bitcoin

It would be a long game though

When it comes to entertainment, Getty basically runs the entire show, and there is no close second best.
