Gonna say it openly: #onlyzaps is dumb.

Client predifined #onlyzaps is dumber.

"My first impulse last Friday 21/04 when I received the latest Damus update was obviously to test it and give feedback, as far as I was able, to its developers.

I immediately realized that something was not quite in line with my principles, as soon as this option was activated you automatically affected the experience of other users by hiding the (controversial) like button without their consent and in a unilateral way."

Agreed. Huge waste of time to build such a useless add on. There is much more important things they should be developing . 😅

I did a similar rant on this also. The add on is dumb as it comes.

Wasted time, efforts and unnecessary controversy.

I thought the revolution is decentralization not fighting invented problems that give rise to other problems (lower engagement, perception of a "paid app", bloated comments section, etc...).

I got roasted for saying this even though I was literally just providing perfectly polite and civil user feedback on a public beta. I don't get why everyone was whipped up into a frenzy over feedback on a beta that allows users to change the UX of other users without consent. Like yeah of course people won't like that. Change the user's UX as much as you want, the more options the better, but no reason someone else's setting should change mine.

They forget this is not for developers or a niche group, it's for everyone, for users of the larger internet, including people who don't want a bitcoin wallet let's say. And likes are part of the larger internet culture.

It's just dumb and fuckin up the vibe for no reason.

People allover internet already know likes are "meaningless" nonetheless it's an easy form of communication. And they like it!

Tried it out for the weekend as it is a uniquely different direction for a social client. I like the idea of it insofar as it encourages interaction while removing the principle source of dopamine that makes social media addicting. At first when I started using nostr it was the case that some clients didn’t include either a like option or a zap function (maybe still?) so was kind of appreciating that too—not assuming uniformity across all clients. I do find your perspective interesting and helpful when thinking about the experience of all people present here

In any case, thanks for sharing this feedback for all to read.

Good feedback.

Only one thing, zaps are a stronger source of dopamine activation, so that's not fixed.

Only the entry barrier is raised and participation gets lower. And there's nothing to be fixed, that's how humans work, it's an adaptative feature not a bug. Let each one decide what it wants to do or can afford to do: hit repost, like or zap.

🤙

Zaps are worse, I'm preparing another article where I develop it, but it has changed my opinion about it a lot. They are even dangerous

Just read your first write-up, looking forward to the second. It’s a very important task not to fall into the old traps so thank you for expressing your concerns quickly. Experimentation is good, feedback, reflection, openness are essential. 🤙

Woow thank you #[3], so many interesting people I am meeting today. I hope to be up to the task in my next article.😀

I'm on Amethyst so didn't get the option of testing it. I also didn't notice any like buttons missing. I think I was able to like the posts of zap only accounts. I assume they didn't see them. Not sure if others could see them.

The issue I see with zaps is that a 1000 sat zap costs more to some than others. For someone on $2 a day, 1000 sats is a couple of hours work. For someone else, it's insignificant. For the reciecer of a pseudo anonymous zap, they appear the same. If we want nostr to break down barriers, we need to think about how to signal value appropriately.

Yes that’s a good point

Exactly. Zaps are not equally accesibile for two reasons.

The senders. Poor people are left out. Their interactions would drop.

The receivers. People tend to zap more well known accounts, influencers, etc.

The halo effect. They are prevalidated and common people also desire validation from them. Senders send them zaps because they feel familiar and then sit there and imagine saylor looking at their zaps and thinking of them after his bot publishes an ai pic.

It felt like righteous posturing to me and as a result my zapping has dropped way off.

Same here... Didn't think about it until now but you're right...
