Gonna say it openly: #onlyzaps is dumb.

Client predifined #onlyzaps is dumber.

"My first impulse last Friday 21/04 when I received the latest Damus update was obviously to test it and give feedback, as far as I was able, to its developers.

I immediately realized that something was not quite in line with my principles, as soon as this option was activated you automatically affected the experience of other users by hiding the (controversial) like button without their consent and in a unilateral way."

Tried it out for the weekend as it is a uniquely different direction for a social client. I like the idea of it insofar as it encourages interaction while removing the principle source of dopamine that makes social media addicting. At first when I started using nostr it was the case that some clients didnโ€™t include either a like option or a zap function (maybe still?) so was kind of appreciating that tooโ€”not assuming uniformity across all clients. I do find your perspective interesting and helpful when thinking about the experience of all people present here

In any case, thanks for sharing this feedback for all to read.

Good feedback.

Only one thing, zaps are a stronger source of dopamine activation, so that's not fixed.

Only the entry barrier is raised and participation gets lower. And there's nothing to be fixed, that's how humans work, it's an adaptative feature not a bug. Let each one decide what it wants to do or can afford to do: hit repost, like or zap.

Zaps are worse, I'm preparing another article where I develop it, but it has changed my opinion about it a lot. They are even dangerous

Just read your first write-up, looking forward to the second. Itโ€™s a very important task not to fall into the old traps so thank you for expressing your concerns quickly. Experimentation is good, feedback, reflection, openness are essential. ๐Ÿค™

Woow thank you #[3]โ€‹, so many interesting people I am meeting today. I hope to be up to the task in my next article.๐Ÿ˜€

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ especially knowing where you came from on this argument

One of the thing that I love about Nostr is that there is no real consensus. Itโ€™s a big creative soup in which the strongest ideas will survive.

I liked that it was rolled out in a provocative way. I loved that it sparked a debate. Disagreement, constructive debating in a civilized yet feisty way is essential to the fabric of our society, let them emotions flow a little, theyโ€™re helpful, if respect reigns in the end.

Some devs decided to have a debate on one of my threads yesterday. Man i love this place

What a good vibe you always inspire me, thank you #[2]

We vibe of each other, weโ€™re just pure vibrating energy (from a purely scientific point of view). My vibe got stifled IRL surrounded by much toxicity. Made me feisty but always in search of what is good, and especially in search of what is true even if itโ€™s ugly. If it gets to vibe in here a bit more truthfully I can only thank you for seeing it, to allow me to exist. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ’œ

Woow #[2]โ€‹, beautiful ๐Ÿ™‚ thanks to you. Because of people like you I have not given up, I have been on the verge of leaving and giving everything I have built to another free soul who would take care of it.

Hi! Donโ€™t be so upset, ofcourse yo may but there is no need. Look at me, Iโ€™m neither a developer nor a content creator. Iโ€™m neither ultra funny nor a user that bunch of lads wants to follow. Iโ€™m just fed up with Blue bird and Mastodon and searching for a fresh breath of air. And itโ€™s because of you (and people like you) Iโ€™m hanging around here. Apps and policies may evolve, they will find the way. In terms of Mandalorian this is the way. Cheers!

I like this thread. โœŒ๏ธPositivity and good vibes all over ๐Ÿ’œ Nostr-style โ˜บ๏ธ

This thread is #[4]โ€‹ style too ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ˜€

Nice to meet you #[3]โ€‹, and thanks for you comments ๐Ÿ™‚

Hang in there. The only reason I'm here is the support I've received from others. And their thoughtful notes.

I have no idea what I'm doing. But there are some real class acts here mainting a firm support structure.

Been here almost a month. What a strange ride.

Nice to meet you #[3]โ€‹ You are right, what a strange but exciting ride!

๐Ÿซ‚ you all

๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿซ‚

In full agreement with all of this.

Thank you #[2]โ€‹, you were not on my radar, followed ๐Ÿ™‚

Very much the same as my own thoughts on the issue.

Thank you #[2]โ€‹ ๐Ÿ™‚

I appreciate your perspective, but letโ€™s not get hyperbolic here. This is still a protocol, itโ€™s decentralized, and you are free to use a different client or fork your own. No one is forcing you to use the #onlyZaps feature, and I should be able to choose to use it freely myself. For me, it cuts down on meaningless noise. If I โ€œlikeโ€ someoneโ€™s post, I either comment on it or send them a zap if they provided me some value. Likes are a vanity metric that provide little signal (or value) to the recipient, and is a lazy form of engagement for the giver.

And one more timeโ€ฆ

โœ… optional

โœ… beta client

โœ… free to use a different client

Thank you #[2]โ€‹, as I say in the article, I do not dispute the intentions, but the ways in which it was implemented.

I realised I didn't follow you, nice to meet you. ๐Ÿ˜€

Likewise! Enjoying the conversation on #onlyzaps. Thatโ€™s for sharing your thought ๐Ÿค™

I realised you couldn't see my like ๐Ÿ˜… So I write it in a reply. I like what you have replied ๐Ÿ™‚

I like how you frame it, quentin.

The way this feature was implemented changed other users experience without their consent.

๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’œ

Thank you very much #[2]โ€‹ ๐Ÿ˜€
