Been thinking about getting a handheld computer. It seems thereโ€™s a growing industry of handheld PCs, specifically for gaming.

But I want to run Ubuntu. Anyone have a recommendation for a handheld Linux machine?

You can run Ubuntu on a steam deck. Never done it myself but Iโ€™ve seen it done.

Can it still run Steam then?

Yea, itโ€™s run more like a desktop client but still works. Again, Iโ€™ve never done it myself but that is my understanding of how it works.

Thanks! Iโ€™m currently looking at the ROG Ally. Compared to the Steam Deck it apparently has better specs, but worse battery life. While the Ally comes with Windows, itโ€™s possible to run ChimeraOS (allegedly). https://youtu.be/6r8t90fW7Kg

Think this going to be too low power for me, but thanks for the recommendation. Might be an interesting chassis for a RetroPi ๐Ÿค“

Haha, I actually ordered one of these already. Going to give it a try, but Iโ€™m concerned about comparability. To date Iโ€™ve only used x86 and amd64 as daily drivers, whereas the DevTerm is ARM. Also it only has 4GB RAM.

Still though, Iโ€™m excited by the built-in receipt printer. Might be useful for Bitcoiny things.

I have heard many good things about the steam deck and it runs linux

Interesting! Looks like itโ€™s based on Arch Linux. That would be a divergence for me, being an Ubuntu maximalist of many years, but may be worth it. I had been considering getting a SteamDeck in any case purely for the gaming.

On second thought, I think I want a machine with a physical keyboard. Probably. Something narrow enough to double-thumb.

I may have to just get the Steam Deck in order to find out.
