After using Nostr for a long time, I found that we don't actually need algorithmic recommendations. The chronological display of content makes people feel relaxed. When all the apps in the world are full of algorithmic recommendations, we actually have no shortage of good content. In the era of information explosion, we don't need so much content either. What we lack is pure trust and sincere exchange of ideas between people. Good content will be recommended and forwarded by trusted people, and Zap is the best way to reward it. And those who can join Nostr are already the best people selected by Bitcoin and Freedom ideas.

The longer I am in Nostr, the more I love #Nostr 🫂💜🤙

I feel exactly the same

I've found that I'm okay with just missing stuff. It feels a lot like "living in the moment." I generally just scroll through the newest notes while I'm on and then dip. As a result, the amount of time it takes up is more limited. The platforms would queue things in such a way that I'd stay on longer. To be fair, that was my own lack of discipline. But they also dial in on parts of our humanity that make it maximally difficult to walk away. The discipline bar is a lot lower for me with how I use Nostr.

Completely agree, I like having things in chronological order.

Better still... I like that I can just do that, and anyone who wants a special organized feed can do that too!

Its just so cool to let anyone do what they actually want.

💯

The algo is what got me off X.

This is the truth 😂

Amen. I sometimes think “what if I miss something?” Then I’m reminded that it’s okay. It’s okay not to stress, this is life. We’re not meant to know everything and have the stress that accompanies what that brings.

That sounds really nice, but nah. Anything can be displayed in chronological order and chronological order _is also an algorithmic recommendation_.

And Other Stuff needs navigation or you can't find anything.

Like, how do you find Nostr meetups in your area, that take place within the next 4 months and are likely to include someone from the last meetup you attended, without an algorithmic feed?

Even if you use a search bar, the results you get are a highly-algorithmic feed, ideally ranked by relevance, that can be requested at any time, by refreshing the viewer and rerunning the filter.

Why should the only use case for Nostr be, "Sitting in the couch, scrolling past Bitcoin memes and housepet galleries, for 30 minutes?"

I should describe it as intelligent algorithm recommendation. Sorting by time is a reflection of real life, which does not require intelligent algorithms.

**natural algorithm** (time) > **artificial algorithm** (attention bait power / fiat ads revenue potential)

💯 Natural algorithm (time) is POW

Computers are literally clocks.

I have been on Nostr for just a few weeks and content discovery is definitely a challenge but that could be a function of active users being limited at the moment. I definitely do not want what I am running from - predatory algorithms. But I do find myself wanting to craft my own algo for discovery but then have my default be chronological.

Welcome to #Nostr 🫂

Yes, there are many clients that have daily trending post rankings. Freerse, Amethyst, Primal, etc. But Nostr still requires us to pay attention to our favorite accounts, and then build our own trust list from their follow lists and shares.

I agree. I love nostr 💜⚡️

Same here re. ur conclusion… and the overall idea. Well put 🫡🔥⚡️🙏

🫂💜🤙

So what you’re saying?…Trusted people ARE the algorithm.

Trust networks are more suitable

Amen 🙏

🫂💜🙏

yes

Well said! Thank you 🙏

Enjoy this sentiment

As long as there’s a way to stop it being gamed, the “most zapped” content is the best in theory

Plus creativity happens in spurts, so the idea an app is constantly pushing the best stuff with the algorithm to keep your attention isn’t a natural process

Nostr feels so much better as a user

Less anxious for sure

💯 Enjoy

There is absolutely no way to stop me from making any number of accounts to consistently zap my own content to make it look like it’s getting more zaps then it really is.

Yes, everything can be faked. Good content will be Zap, commented, liked, and forwarded by trusted accounts, which is the foundation of the trust network.

While I agree with the first part I definitely don’t agree with the second part.

Trust gets us into a can of worms…

We need a trust less system…

I don’t disagree. I’d also want to explore the possibility of choosing from a multitude of algos and seeing which one works best. Maybe also having the ability to customize your own

Agreed, it's open here. Many clients have provided this solution.

The only algorithm you need is the chronological one. That way, when you open your software, you know how much you need to catch up on, and then once you get caught up on it, you can close the software and go about the rest of your day. That's how it should be. You don't have to wonder about whether you missed something interesting, because you know for a fact you did not.

Agreed. 🙏

I think it is good when we aren't a lot of users and notes. But with mass usage you will have a lot of notes and spam... For the moment i agree, but i think this will have to change with usage, and allow user to personalize their feed.

Agreed, the only thing I’d say is giving people the choice is better.

I loved Instagram when it was its chronological feed before Facebook bought it. It was a platform for people that got out and did things to see what other people were out doing and to connect. Facebook had its way with it, now it’s broken for me. Abandoned it along with the others.

I understand how you feel 🫂

I loved Instagram before it had ads. I even dated some women I met on it. I can't stand to look at it anymore.

Wonderful life.

If AI controls algorithms in the future, AI creates virtual girlfriend accounts, and AI creates beautiful videos, we will need more real social networks. Perhaps Nostr will become an original social network that rejects AI illusions.

I hope so.

I wish there were options for simple, selectable algorithms like a randomizer for what my follows posted across the day to shuffle the timezones.

Great idea

You took the words right out of my head!

You just need to go Global on Nostr to get content, no need for algorithms like other social media.

* that YOU don't actually need algorithmic recommendations 😉

most people will have some communism leftovers for a while, no worries

After using Nostr for a short time (a little over 24 hours), I agree.

Totally agree with this. Just got on Nostr at 4 PM for the first time today and have plenty of chronological content to catch up on. It’s nice to see what I want to see and then pop over on the trends a bit to see what discussion is going on. Nostr is the future and I’m pumped to be here.

This is the way 🤙

Recommendation algorithms are the invention that keeps people under control when it comes to information.

I'm a white Western European, disabled (governmentally speaking), straight guy who knows what this is like, as I was destroyed by Instagram's algorithm one time. It stinks to high heaven like a dead person who vomited before dying, and having relapsed so hard, his body gave in.

False.

You only think this is true because how quiet it is here.

I genuinely dislike Nostr's cronogical display of content. I wish my app was optimized to feed me posts from more different users. My attention budget just can't afford to give one person so much attention just because they were the most recent person to post, or just because they post more than other people.
