'Nostr, the Strangest and Clunkiest Twitter Replacement' - a blog reviewing nostr.

Kind of a cool headline lol.

https://cmdr-nova.online/2024/07/11/nostr-the-strangest-and-clunkiest-twitter-replacement/

It's a shame people think you NEED to have a wallet and money to use nostr, you literally don't, and a fair amount of people use nostr without.

'All you have to do is have a … bitcoin wallet, and some money.'

But whatever, there are some valid points made as feedback. I still have no idea why the nip05 verification thing is such a big deal. You can also happily use nostr without it (right?) I think the reviewer got the gist of that too.

I don't know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They seem pretty cool and open, and I think their feedback is interesting. Perhaps we've heard it all before. The 'bitcoin tourettes' problem hasn't gone away lol.

thats a good review from a mastodon user, im not using nip05 now, was thinking why would i need to be verified

Nostr addresses are not verification. They never were. They are a way to identify yourself in a human readable format.

They absolutely are verification. If they weren't they wouldn't need to look up a json file on the supplied domain to provide a tick or cross (if failed to verify).

It's verification that a file and a field exist. That's it. It's not verification in the traditional sense of verification like on every other social app.

Yes, but if you own a domain you guarantee that it is you. E.g. Will has multiple impersonators, but they can't verify using his domain jb55.com so you do actually know it's him. This level of verification is only important if you need to establish trust. I don't so the existence/ verification of my nip05 is unimportant and at times has been broken with no real effect on my or my mutuals experience.

im just an old dinosaur ser, there are no benefits impersonating me

I'm just an insane eagle attempting to impersonate a sane man.

I thought that was a volcano👀

I suppose this is a difference between it technically not being a verification, but as a first impression / process, but in reality feeling like it is some sort of verification process.

It can mean verification. For example, if you’re a company account, using a nip-05 from the company’s domain.

What do you think about nip-05 for real world verification? For example, I want to survey people belonging to the same organization or community. In the real world, they claim a nip-05 name with their npub. I can now trust responses from these npubs without the need for some over blown account system.

yea, im not against nip05, its a good method of verification if you want to be associated w/ an org/community

This was a good review. They clearly don't understand Nostr, but that's not their fault. Nostr is very technical and many aspects don't work as easy or as well as one would expect.

That's actually something that irks the shit out of me as well. For at least eight months when I started using Nostr, despite already running a lightning node, I did not set up zapping. And the pushyness of people to get none Bitcoiners into using it probably drives away a large amount of people.

But whatever, I do also understand that this is a protocol built mainly by Bitcoiners. So I don't think that's going to go away anytime soon.

That’s an interesting point. One can certainly use nostr without zaps, be it for the social media use case, or note taking or long form writing or any other digital communication utility.

I’d argue that the reason so many of us greet new users and try to onboard them to Lightning is because for many of us, that was part of the “ah ha” moment with nostr — replacing likes and algorithms with zaps and value-for-value. We’re excited about this paradigm shift and want to bring more people to the party.

You’re right - nostr as a communications tool doesn’t require zaps or Bitcoin or money to function.

But the integration of instant and censorship-resistant micropayments with a global and decentralized information network definitely gives nostr a unique, powerful, and new role in an internet previously defined by algorithmic control, markets constrained by national currency, and siloed social graphs.

Thanks for making me think about this more deeply 🙏🫂🫡

(random idea that popped into my head: clients offer a turn off feature like closed sign that signals the user does not want to use zaps, i know its been mentioned before by other creators, but maybe adds an icon that say NO or NZW (no zaps wanted)...it can be set when they are setting their profile features.. This does not need a response, i am typing it out so i will stop thinking about it)

I'm definitely not denying the Bitcoin integration is extremely powerful.

But for a new user it might be a lot to take in and more than they're ready to absorb at the moment because Nostr is already a whole new paradigm (I kind of hate this buzzword, but I can't think of anything else right now) in and of itself. At least when compared to traditional social media.

Definitely a good point. It’s already a big shift in mindset; trying to then change your entire worldview around money may need to wait for another day lol

The word paradigm is certainly overused these days, which is a shame because it’s a great word lol

Come for the social media, stay for the phd in economics.

Not the best marketing line

the BEST marketing line 😂🫠

My colleague on a project once wrote a piece of modelling software that was based on a structural geology professors research. Although 15 years ahead of its time, It failed as there were maybe 10 people in the world who could validate it. Best marketing for those with low time preference and high curiosity but nostr needs other hooks and that requires ease of onboarding and use for low attention span without the sensation of mental bombardment!

Haha I absolutely agree. And very well-said!

Could have missed it, but I didn’t see a timestamp on the review. Any idea how long ago this was written?

This was a good review. They clearly don't understand Nostr, but that's not their fault. Nostr is very technical and many aspects don't work as easy or as well as one would expect.

It was an ok review, I agree with Derek, they don’t really understand what nostr is… which even non-technical me got on here, saw the awesome potential, and the fact that is not just a Twitter clone… but then I also remember the mid-90s internet and the writer seems too young for that. They also got hung up on ai in parts, but to each their own…

“Definitely in need of polish, but responsive enough that it doesn’t feel like it’s going to explode my phone.”

I took the win at “people seemed nice and I wasn’t spammed with swastikas”

Progress!! 🥳

Lol, yeah I enjoyed the gonzo-ish style of review, it's almost (I don't mean this as an insult) like old Vice, kinda. It actually made an effort in exploring, gave great first impressions and entertainingly written:). I personally would've gone for the Vice headline 'i visited Jack Dorsey Nazi bar, and all I got was an ayahuasca enema'. 🫢😋

nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m “My overall impression of Nostr, the network Jack Dorsey ran to after being evicted from Twitter, and chased off of Bluesky, is that it needs … uh, work.”

where the social expats hang out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Can someone with a mastodon account bring this person back so we can help them?

Still here

nostr:npub17zk2weur62r0t4endvfg3z84muljn8s8r9e74up72gqfrh8rxphqlqm5zy nothing wrong on starting fresh a new pair of keys specially if set by a key manager in browser https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nos2x-fox/ for firefox and https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nos2x/kpgefcfmnafjgpblomihpgmejjdanjjp for chrome. You can have a NIP05 with your own domain, is not so difficult to set over a weekend. Creators are currently realizing allocation is king, relays make sure content gets distributed and so the end user can pick whatever client he likes to display the content, so for you can upload your stuff and by the magic of nostr protocol pick a client instagram-like to see the instagram-like content, and so for the rest of apps known nowadays. My personal favs so far: nostrudel at desktop, amethyst at mobile

Decent review, there is a lot of BTC because it was built by people that like BTC and attracts users with that similar interest. I don’t see that as a problem for nostr. Good place to hang out and meet like minded people without the BS algorithm of Twitter/X

Yeah, I don't think it is surprising that nostr is how it is. I also don't think it is surprising that it consistently gets this sort of feedback tho.

You can just hope it expands and grows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think there sorta does exist a bitcointwitter culture feedback loop. Nostr has a lot of bitcointwitter expats, clients recommend bitcointwitter personalities and post style / content to retain bitcointwitter expats exploring nostr..In a way it kind of reads as 'hey this is like bitcointwitter but better, stay here'. It gives the impression of a bitcointwitter telegram group to an outsider of BT. I think it's often forgotten twitter is more than bitcointwitter, there are other people to be catered to. Just imo.

Spot on assessment for sure. I forget people have interest outside BTC 😂😂 once you go down the rabbit hole it hard to to see everything through a Bitcoin lense.

I think the biggest thing holding Nostr back right now (besides the network effect) is UX (including how to setup wallets etc) and the lack of uppfront information on how the relays work with NIPs .

I think a better overall onboarding and more stable clients will go a long way. I'm sure the Nostr community will get there soon.. Tons of activity on the dev side.

The concept is great I think, just need to mature a bit.
