The way to do politics is not to associate yourself with any one individual but to support a specific action only. A politician will always let you down in some way. Tying your identity to them only makes you defend the worst of their actions for the sake of appearing consistent - it’s a human bias and politicians count on it.

Instead of saying I support Trump, you could say I support Trump’s action of releasing Ross.

Become politically neutral and don’t tie any part of yourself to them. This will keep your thinking objective and more rational. You can then condemn any action that goes against your values should you choose to.

One can be for and against the same person, the same country or any other person and country without contradicting themselves.

there is a case for 'principles over personalities'

Excellent advice well stated!

Absolutely! It’s about focusing on actions, not personalities. Political neutrality allows for more honest and critical thinking without the emotional attachment to an individual or party. Supporting what aligns with your values without defending every decision made is the path to more rational, principled political involvement. It’s about the issue, not the ego 🍻

This is the rational approach I decided to take. Unfortunately, most people are too dim to understand. They just assume that I'm a Trumpster or an anti-Trumpster depending upon my position on a given topic.

Yeah that tends to be the case. Have to explain that this is not how we evaluate things.

Well stated and why I wish we'd move away from the two party system completely. It's degraded into two groups of boorish football fans and I don't see where my policy desires are being met 😠

Lefties concerned about climate change are currently shitting on Telsa, the think Elon Musk did to help combat climate change.

Conclusion: people are not smart, they are tribal animals

why do people find this so difficult?

Indeed

Trump supporters won't hear you

This is not addressed at any group but more general observation. Applies to all parties or anyone who engages in identity politics
