Without America would the slave trade have downsized so quickly?

Hell yes...English did not take part in the trade and the Methodist Christians led by John Wesley abhorred slavery....big split among Christians during that era!

"Britain was one of the most successful slave-trading countries. Together with Portugal, the two countries accounted for about 70% of all Africans transported to the Americas."

🤔

To answer your original question of who stopped the trade first btwn US and UK....UK stopped about 25-30yrs before the emancipation proclamation.

The Wesleyan movmnt was pretty big...they frowned on the trade..

John Wesley, a prominent Anglican cleric and theologian, was a vocal opponent of slavery. He published "Thoughts Upon Slavery" in 1774, where he condemned the practice as unjust and contrary to Christian principles, urging slave traders and owners to repent and free their slaves.

Wesley's stance on slavery influenced figures like William Wilberforce, who continued the fight against slavery after Wesley's death in 1791.

Wesley's writings and advocacy played a significant role in the abolitionist movement, contributing to the eventual passage of the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833.
