It is so extremely expensive to be poor. It's hard to understand this for people who've never came close to this but it is extremely difficult to get out of misery alone.

When you're poor every problem compounds in bigger problems. You see a small problem with you car and you think "I'll go get that fixed in 2 months when I have the money" but before you get there the problem compounds into something bigger so not it's even more expensive and you have to wait 4 months. By then your car break down and you lose your job. That's if you're rich enough to get a car in the first place.

It's expensive to be poor.

I've experience that and it's so true

"The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet." -Men At Arms (1993), Terry Pratchett

Take a guess what the economic theory is called. Its really original, I swear.

The cheap boot théorème.

I was so convinced nobody could have figured that out 🀣

Yeah, been there. That's why being able to buy old, used cars with cash makes me feel like a millionaire.

Exactly why experiencing true poverty is so great. You don't need a lot of money to be rich.

Yeah, I'm probably one of the poorer people on here, since this place is full of Bitcoin OGs and millionaires and billionaires and stuff, but I don't want for anything and have some savings, and I feel very blessed.

I guess it's a bit like being a nun or a monk, where you have all of your basic needs covered, and that's about it. They live an unusually long time and are more healthy than average.

So, it's a vow of poverty, but not of destitution or chronic indebtedness.

You are middle class πŸ˜€

Yeah, but a middle-class person in Germany is relatively poor. πŸ˜‚

But, like I said, I have everything I need and no debt, so I don't really suffer from lack of money. There's a point where more money doesn't really add much to someone's personal happiness, but there's definitely a point where less begins to detract from it.

One thing being on Nostr has really driven home, for me, is that rich people usually live in fear of losing their money, or their fancy car, or being kidnapped and ransomed and etc.

There's a weird benefit to not having much because, if you lose it, it's like... yeah, oh well.

Another thing is food and health. Eating cheap food and skipping stuff like dental cleanings often bankrupts you, later, when the doctors' bills start piling up and you find it difficult to keep a job because you are too ill.

Please dont remind me of the dental cleanings... I've been stalling a cavity for years now and I just finally started seriously eating away at the debt 😭

It definitely is. One example how the system helps with that. My country gives you 7 day window to pay a speeding ticket at discounted price 50% off. After 7 days you must pay full price.

It's a reward for those who have money not a punishment.

This also explains why when "the poor" identify the root cause of their situation they will often act violently to fix it. No other options. Nothing to loose.

This hits close to home. Doing my best to set myself up so it never happens again. It's a humbling reality check.

Poverty is a great experience
