Contemplating running my own node. Should I use my main desktop or build another one focused on full node and later maybe lightning? I’m also unsure whether I can install the core software using sky broadband. Should I try it or get fibre first?

I’m reading this to get some idea of what setting up and running a node needs. I’ve also sent my son a copy see what he thinks

I bought an inexpensive dell mini tower pretty cheap. And put in a new SSD. And installed Start9 OS. It was really simple and straightforward to get going.

My son buys and sells parts and computers. He has several computers he’s built both old tech and new. Trying to get him interested enough to test install see if it works. I’ll see what pc’s he’s got not doing anything or upgrade my own

That’s perfect to get started!

Can you use the start9 OS for running a server AND a node?

If this is a dumb question, it's bc I'm not a techi.

Yep! Start9 is an OS that’s a server and loads of apps. Happens to run full BTC node and lightning too

This is an easy one: buy a separate box for your node. Yeah, it might cost you $150-$200, and yeah, maybe you want to spend nothing, and yeah, maybe most of your “desktop” use is simply downtime.

But Bitcoin nodes are best when they’re boring and doing little more than confirming PoW.

The broadband upload speed is an issue would need fibre or the node would hog all the bandwidth. Can get my son to build me a low power pc specifically to be left on all the time. Until then I’ll keep looking at upgrading the speeds needed to become fully self custodial 😎

I run on a cable connection with only 50Mbps upload. Only issue with slow d/l speeds is how long it will take to sync the 700+GB timechain at startup (or after unexpected power outages).
