Interesting story on the psychology of Bluesky…

> "Social media has always been, at heart, a big status game. The most successful social platforms are the ones that allow people to efficiently gain access to a larger network and accrue status inside it."

>

>"…Bluesky is also an attempt at status migration. Currently, it is filled with former Twitter power users who are rightfully fed up with being on a platform whose official policies seem intended to troll them, open them up to harassment, and make their experience less enjoyable. Status is about respect, and it’s clear that most of Bluesky’s users have left a platform they feel does not respect them. It’s exciting to watch new status relationships evolve. "

It's an interesting way of looking at it. Nostr isn't so much about status - you can't even be sure how many followers someone has… I'm not sure I want Nostr to get focused on status, but status is also about reputation, and reputation does make sense in a lot of contexts… Can we take the good part from the idea of status and incorporate it somehow?

I think domain as identifier can provide that status here if someone wants it. Funny #[2] doesn’t use one at all, and #[3] users nostr plebs. Can’t hate on being with the plebs. Wish they did because when we start to onboard notable people like Kennedy, they probably should be advised to use this as part of their onboarding.

Twitter got carried away, and domains scale appropriately, one user recognized me from my SoundCloud days and they can verify it’s really me, don’t need blue checks for sub genres. Maybe we need to allow for multiple domains, so if you have done something notable in a different realm you could verify that.

NIP-39 confirms your identity at other places (Twitter, GitHub, Mastodon & Telegram)…

But AFAIK none of the big clients support it. Yesterday I noticed it in action on #[5]‘s profile at nostr.build, but haven’t asked him how he set it up.

Badges could also be another status / credentialing tool depending on how they’re used. The issue is knowing which badges mean something significant.

I could see those two things working together, earn a badge for linking. #[3] could issue badges.

don’t love the centralized domain system, but it does work and scale better than a general mark. I think will talked about removing the checks from damus. I’d like to use my domain hack as a my only “name” crossed nostr. And bluesky has proven this is a very popular method of identifying. A little bit of old internet is ok.

I agree. I think Will needs to read that article and think about what motivates people to participate in social media.

Don’t ever kill anything that confers “status”.

And the thing is I don’t remember because I’ve tried so many nostr apps. One of them must have set it. But which one? Dunno.
