She's wrong. Voting was supposed to be: selecting the best suitable person to represent your ideas/values/principles at other (political) situations where you cannot represent yourself.
Granted, partly an obsolete idea given our current state of communication and information technology.
There is nothing wrong with voting, the problem is that we set the bar very low for someone to be a candidate.

I meant that in a society where postal service is the fastest means of communication, it is completely unthinkable to raise a matter with the whole of society, thus representatives. However, with current comm and tech, it would be possible to inform the public and call out a national vote. (Presuming for a moment that the most complicated challenges wrt secure voting are resolved, or amortized/worked-around for less critical matters..)
I am leaning into this train of thought more heavily. I opt out of the broken financial system, why should I not opt out of the political system?
