Again, I have no f idea what is going but my question is this…

WoT is a client level bandaid for a larger spam problem…at the network level, I’m assuming this is correct?

If so, then the problem is larger than just reply guy, also an assumption?because there are a 100m bots or more for every one of us

If so, PoW would (reasonably) answer this question at the network level but would require hardware? Correct? Or at least… a built out node on a personal server? Or no?

I hate to say this but a ledger that I used to adore had this issue with bots and there was a part of the code I think time leap… anyway, the network was fixed by making each “note” a tiny fractional cost… can this happen here? Say a sat a post/reply or something a little bigger than what bots would pay?

Hardware can be expensive, a server alone was once a big deal for me but a fraction of a penny on a free wallet? Worth it.

This could just be a ramble that makes no sense, I don’t totally understand this network or the relays yet.

Thank you for coming to my confused TedxTalk. 🙏🏼

I am also confused most days so thank you for this note. All I can say is that our devs are on it!

"Say a sat a post/reply or something"... It's technically possible 😏 But also not possible until all clients show messages received from relays. For now, what I've implemented in Nosflare is it hashes every note sent to it. And this can be fine-tuned down to the hash of a single word. So, for example, as I've done with the wss://relay.nosflare.com relay it only allows the same thing once. If someone else writes a note that just says "GM" they'll be the only ones who can publish a note with just "GM" that day. But as this is configurable, it can help at least stop spam that blasts the same thing over and over again. Of course, it can be evaded should they iterate those notes incrementally with something that makes the content unique each time. In my mind, it's the best compromise for now, that doesn't rely on WoT, and won't effectively excommunicate interactions from new peeps on Nostr.

Okay gotcha. That makes sense. Good break down. TY!

GM ☀️ and PV💜🧡

Could such a system be instated whereby a note has a minimum cost of 1 sat (with option to increase) and the sat(s) are set up like a "bounty" where the first person to reply would claim the sat(s)?

This could come alongside a feed filtering option to only view notes greater than x sats, I think a system like this could be very interesting.

Although, while writing I just realised the problem with this... 😣 fucking ReplyGuy would sweep up all the sats... could it work on a pay it forward system? Where replies also cost to post and have the same sort of "bounty system" 🤔 I guess this would lead to sats perpetually locked up in a loop 😣

Don't mind me... early morning thinking out loud 🤣 I think I need another coffee

WoT can be in the client or it can also be on a relay. Like my relay nostr.mom uses WoT for comparing reports of users with their trust score in order to slow down a user or not. To check whether reports are authentic or whether there are enough reports that are enough to slow down a user. WoT can be also useful for determining whether a fresh user has enough score to be able to tag many people, add a lot of images, send a lot of links or not just in the beginning of his adventure.

My relays actually require PoW sometimes. I guess I am the first users of dynamic PoW. Based on how much a user spams my scripts sometimes require more PoW before dropping the user altogheter. So these requirements act like a warning if the user happens to listen to relay responses.

I think some relays will get better at handling spam and thats a good thing. A gradient of options is good for nostr users.

Makes so much sense! Thank you!

Spam assassin type solution is needed. WoT is a red herring, or band aid, as you rightly point out. Not much new here, spammers have been around for 3 decades at least. There are well tested counter measures. Many are already in place, but no one wants to admit it.

Hmmm yes I assumed as much

If you’re wondering which solution should we be using to counteract spam: PoW or WoT, the answer is: sometimes one, sometimes the other, and sometimes both, depending on the context and the nature of the spam.

We avail ourselves of all solutions at our disposal. Abundance mindset.

#WoT

I like that

Yea I tend to agree. I think Will (Damus client creator) mentioned something along the lines of #proofofwork #pow is a viable solution.

Which really is a step towards Web5

Just not sure how quickly Nostr as a protocol will get there (I think there is a NIP I heard about along these lines as well)
