I don't know of any alternative cache relays to Primal's.

Mute lists just tell the client not to display notes from that npub to you, so it should work retroactively on old notes from that npub, too.

Ok I thought it blocked and muted the npub completely.. I understand some may slip thru when they shitpost nonstop and we are on the same relays..

It should mute them completely, for you. It's just that on Nostr that's all "mute" means. The notes from that npub are still there on the relays, your client just shouldn't display them to you anymore. Anyone else who hasn't muted that npub will still see them, though.

Ah, I see that despite clicking "Mute User" and approving the modal multiple times, this npub is not getting added to my mute list.

Was doing it via the web app. Just did it again from iOS Primal App and it was added to the mute list.

I had thought that maybe the client was doing mute filtering once on pulling from the relays into a local cache, rather than filtering when reading the cache.

I am not sure exactly how the client filters out notes from those on your mute list, and each client may work differently there.

It could be that they pull all notes on your read relays into the local cache, and then purge any that are authored by your muted npubs, or they may ask the relay to only send notes from nouns that don't match your mute list, so that those notes just never hit your local cache.

My guess is the former, though, since #Amethyst will tell me when a quoted note is hidden because it was authored by someone I have muted. Seems to me it would only know that if it had received the note from the relays into the local cache.

I am sure a client could choose to ignore your mute list altogether. But they don't, because they know everyone would drop their client in a heartbeat.
