If something good is to come out of the riots, maybe after time they’ll be more of a push back against surveillance?

It’s worth noting that in the same time the riots went on 22 protesters were arrested at a power plant, which has mostly gone under the radar.

Recently some protesters got prison sentences of 4 years. One of which was jailed just for being on a Zoom call.

I’m sure some, due to a political view point, will agree with the sentencing, as others with an opposing political outlook will feel the same about the rioters.

For clarity, I’m not a fan of people who smash up mosques because a dark skinned person did something. There’s very specific words for those kinds of people but I don’t want to live in an authoritarian state either.

The only solution I see is that we grown networks like Nostr, the Fediverse, open source and privacy focused tools, self host what we can and try and get our irl friends involved. It’s not easy but over time I hope more people will realise they can leave the walled gardens and enjoy the open internet again.

I think the problem is we already crossed this surveillance evidence bridge when the climate protestors were arrested.

True but there are tools that can help reduce the risks. If these become more widely known that could help.

I mean we’re all going to hell in a handcart but we can at least try to enjoy the ride!

It's a shame we never notice these issues until it affects people we care about. Many people thought just stop oil was a nuisance and never said anything, and thereby set this precedent.

If we really want free speech we have to speak up the first time it's restricted; and not first time it offends our sensibilities.

We also failed to say anything when pro Palestinian protesters were evicted from US campuses. We can do that. We have to speak up for everyone equally.

Were peaceful protesters really arrested as well as rioters? That's concerning if so.

Do you have details?

This was more about the use of cctv to gather evidence and facial recognition to analyse it.

I don't think any peaceful protestors were arrested.
