I partly agree, but I do think DHTs are neat, and I'm glad someone's using them for something equivalent to "relay discovery." I'd kind of like to build out something similar to that for nostr.

I don't like that messages are not signed, that seems like a recipe for disaster, but I think it's important to John because if you have to sign every message, then you need to keep a key in a "hot wallet" or face the annoyance of breaking out your "cold wallet" whenever you want to post something. And I think John regards *that* as a recipe for disaster.

Anyway, I'm glad there are options!

I think DHTs are neat too, and maybe cool for relay discovery, someone needs to write a nip for that 😛

Hello, the author of Pkarr that uses Mainline DHT here, you can go to app.pkarr.org and put your npub and relays and whatever you want to put in a DNS packet (because that is what it is).

The only problem that prevented Nostr from adopting Pkarr despite my constant advocacy for it for almost two years; the root identity HAS to be ed25519 key, this is not my decision this is what the biggest DHT in the world decided to use decade ago (see estimate of number of nodes here relay.pkarr.org).

So yeah I would love it if Nostr supports Pkarr as a root identity or at least as much as it supports ICANN with Nip05... but that is up to client developers.

Why can't nostr use its own DHT with its own sec256k1 key? I mean I understand we lose out on the existing nodes, but we won't need a whole new protocol? It could just be a nostr DHT? And if accepting people, the current client and relays could become nodes, which is also a good sized network.

Also can't we derive ed25519 keys with nostr keys? What's the catch there?
