I’m not used to social media without constant troll swarms, so it’ll take some getting used to.

Sorry. I can can irritate you if it makes you feel more at home.

What the hell is wrong with you?

Hope that helps.

That’s better, thanks!

The frog was boiling. Takes some getting used to getting a 2nd life in cool water.

Welcome to Nostr!

Hope to see your work here, it’s the only social media I use now!

❤️❤️❤️❤️

😂

Once you get used to Nostr, it hard to go back to traditional social media.

Here there is no algorithms to keep you hooked or engaged, no persuasive psychology design..notes appear in the chronological order.

And people are nice and welcoming 🫂💜

They will come. But that will pave the way for reputation systems and better filtering at the client or relay layer.

You probably won’t get the large engagement you got on Twitter, but everyone who engages will be a real person and nostr is full of the coolest people in the world. Plus you’re gonna get Bitcoin and shakas instead of worthless likes 🤙⚡️

Pardon but new here as well. What guarantees all are real people?

Take my profile for example, i host my verification on my own domain and through Github which is maintained with a cost.

[785438]

There are a few bots here, but they’re actually pretty cool. It’s early enough to tell the difference, but I’m sure the bots are coming.

Probably everything is coming. A filter for them, when wanted, would be ideal.

Have you tried nostr.wine’s filter? It works very well. I have a few paid relays and keep my global on paid only.

You absolutely have to be on only paid relays to use global.

💯 worth every sat

So new, not familiar with what you mean by filter in this instance on here.

Are you using Damus? I think other clients allow you to filter global too.

Basically, you add some relays like nostr.land and nostr.wine, and you can filter the global feed by only viewing notes submitted to those paid relays.

However, in order for me to see your notes in global, you would have to pay for the relays.

If I follow you (I am) then I will see your notes regardless, because your regular feed pulls from all the relays you’re connected to.

You probably need to add some more relays though. I’m only seeing 4 on your profile. You can visit my profile and just copy my relays.

Thanks. Had to read that a few times to grasp it, but makes sense.

Sorry 😂😂 it’s a lot. I’ve been here since mid December, and was slowly introduced to all this stuff. If you need help, let me know

They make us take these on the daily like a drug test

Makes me wanna convert

😮 what is that from? Twitter?

Lol no, just image search. It was a attempt at a joke

Yeah I got it once I realized who you were responding to 😂🤣 I haven’t been on Twitter so I thought this was real 😝

Oh you weren’t responding to me 😂 Damus showed me as the first person you were talking to

Happened by chance to start setting up and joining right when you did, and the non-cluttered feed let me join in on what others were telling you, giving me an education on nostr. Very cool. As a non-public figure, social media has felt like an advisory algorithm and a very empty place for for a long time. Here's to the this protocol being better.

For years now I’ve been conflicted about Twitter. The experience was mostly not fun at all, but the functionality was still very high for my job. The manipulation has started to outweigh the benefits by a lot I think.

And a fine job you do sir and very thankful for it. Just catching up on the happenings of the last week, and excited to read your latest on Substack.

Platform scalability is and will always be terrible for the social media end user experience. Most of the issues I see is the lack of real time interaction like we had with IRC. A user shouldn’t be able to jump into a conversation on their lunch break 6 hours later because they see a post they don’t agree with. Users should be forced to respond in real time or lose access to the conversation.

Should have a choice between static and dynamic engagement, but perhaps when the algorithms are completely removed, more of the dynamic is allowed to foster.

The nostr protocol should integrate something that allow Discord-like "channels" - maybe call them doors - tied to public keys. It would be a great integration for dynamic chat rooms and a great harkening back to mIRC. Let the naming convention for channels be whatever is typed between double hashtags, i.e. ##first door## for instance. The user/public key can carry these "doors" or "channels" with them, allow other public keys in, moderate them, remove them, etc.

##firstdoor##

The a key's permission to a note with 4 hashtags indicate a message only to those allowed to them.

Imagine the user interface possibilities with that.

I’m totally going to agree with you later this week sometime…

This is an interesting thought. I have been thinking a lot about how to use nostr like IRC. We need a nostrChat client...

1. client allows user to invtive npubs starting a chat

2. the user that starts the chat hosts it peer to peer: no relay needed, anyone can be invited

3. everyone that joins the chat is direct connected to the starting user's session (database)

4. database can be cleared after the chat ends, or the session can be passed off to any other user in the chat for them to host it.

Not sure if the protocol supports all that, but it should not be too much to add a nip. My idea of doing this peer to peer keeps from adding cost to the relays. Best way to code this would be an api that could be added to any client.

Hi Matt, hope you are enjoying the morning sun here in LA!!

Each service is going to have its own character. There may be a place for "platforms" like Notes, Locals and Twitter but decentralized services are badly needed.

They came after you hard for Twitter files but don’t hide—come here for the quiet—stay there for the engagement 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hey Matt, just throwing this out there….a semi-autobiographical book accounting the lead up, revelations and aftermath of your Twitter/Musk experience would make for a very interesting read, and a thoughtful Christmas present 😉

I am right there with you Matt. I have been on twitter a very long time, it is a important source of news, but with the plethora of trolls, bots, and seemingly much more angry people in general. I am always wrestling with the benefit vs reward ratio.

I speak only for myself, as I only have been on Nostr a couple of weeks or so. Here is my personal summary of this platform called Nostr, so far:

1. Very friendly and most try very hard to keep it this way. (I like this a lot) kind of like tribal in a way. This makes it so pleasant to be here.

2. Bitcoin Maxi here. Bitcoin seems to be a primary core here. As well as privacy (somewhat). I realize a lot of folks may not be so crypto freedom focused but this is core here. (I like all the freedom I can get) The lightning network is wonderful and integrated here, which is huge, I just wonder what will happen when the gov. tries to regulate and demand full kyc here. I will watch. (I hope people resist more gov. regulation)

3. News here is lacking big time.. but Nostr is growing very fast I believe, and hopefully it will keep its zen like happiness for a long time. While adding news.

Serious respect to you.

Ça me touche beaucoup je valide avec un Grand A 😍

Hi Sasha,

I am a starter here on Nostr.

But I like it from the very beginning.

For me, the things I need are now available.

Uncensored social media and being my own bank with bitcoin.

This is the revolution I was dreaming of for so many years...

People have trained to trust their silos and truth doesn’t matter to most. I spend a little defending you and TF. People’s arguments and spun descriptions to trash you. They just repeat the same stuff. I’ve been following you off and on since ‘04. Right now your podcast is the only news I follow.

Def remember a few mornings coming down off acid while my roommate and I would take turns reading aloud articles from the exile and the great shark hunt. Ames signed a copy of my roommates book with “stay mean” and I think that fits rn. The paranoid side of me thinks the CIA is gonna dose you with the California Sunshine.

So very true. I keep using it but I feel forced by some social pressure to maintain it. Slowly starting to not give a F 😅

People seem to go on twitter with the intention to pick fights and read things in the least charitable way possible. At one point one could read twitter replies and get some value from them, but nowadays it's just an endless stream of attempts at "sick burns".

I hope you are right , your job is very important for a lot of people

Hi Matt,

same with me.

Just got my other Twitter account suspended because I sent a DM to a person.

I should authenticate my account with a phone number.

No, I will not do that.

Rather switch to Nostr...

So long as you have the great RSS feed and comments section at Substack, I'm 👍

I'm in same position and I totally agree

Great 💜 thoughts. I’d lie to zap ⚡️ you for this but your wallet isn’t setup. Let me know if you need help.

It would be interesting to hear how your onboarding process goes, trying to figure things out in the nostr world.

Virtually zero trolls here so far. Its amazingly friendly, happy, and helpful here. That may change as it grows, but so far so good.

Glad to see you here, Matt.

If it’ll help you adjust I can offer some whataboutism or random attacks 😜

Just sent you a zap of sats. Thanks for all you do.

Matt you suck! Totally fake reporter…. Just kidding. Thank you for being the lightning rod in the TwitterFiles. You should be proud of the role you’ve played so far in the #GreatAwakening

Keep up the good work 👊🏻
