I want to switch to Android and I’m not sure which phone to go with. I want to be able to use my own apps which is main cause for the switch. I don’t have a Mac nor do I want to pay $100 a year for the right on my iPhone. Suggestions?

Look into a previous generation pixel. When the 9 dropped I got my 8 pro for a great price, almost free on a 2 year contract. The 10 series just released, so you should be able to find the 9 or 9 pro for good deals still.
Get a Pixel 8 and flash graphene on it. still 6 yrs of guaranteed updates.
you can get a used or refurbished one if you are.on a budget. Simplified privacy will sell you one for BTC or XMR.

I’m not interested in Graphene as of now. I’ve ran it before. I mainly want to use my own apps and a quality camera
8 pro camera is great. The first phone that convinced me to leave my interchangable lens camera at home for most occasions. Having the telephoto is a huge difference.
even so, getting updates from Google for the next 6 years is a big advantage.
if they fell apart it'd be less of a sell but Ive never had a Pixel have a hardware problem.
the only option is GrapheneOS on a Pixel at the moment (due to the bootloader)
stock Android = Google sells your personal information

I think currently the pixels are a great choice, to be compatible with #GrapheneOS, which should be the most privacy oriented OS without question.
I opted for a Pixel of the a series. Is with little lower spec. I think mostly for the camera sensors.
Or when repairability is a high need, the Fairphone could be cool. It is an all modular phone where it is doable for everyone to replace down to the camera and displays without much skill or tools. 😉
I suggest a mini tab ( Samsung is pretty good ) with 5g .. more screen ..same portability .. and who needs voice calls ? Anyway ..
5g on tabs costs way less than on phone ..and if someone at your home use google fi ..you can simply ask for another sim card ..free ..
Pixel, for the reasons given by others. GrapheneOS compatible. Also doesn't run any of the UI crap that Samsung and others do. Pure, unadulterated android.
