That's crazy. Sadly soon free nodes will be useless.
I think they work fine as long as use is limited to followers or maybe 2nd/3rd degree followers. Useless for discovery/ global, yes.

What is with proof of Work for posting? Isn't that a solution?
Should be. Relays could be configured to accept only posts meeting a specific PoW target.

Currently, only nostr.mom public relay that have implemented some spam filter mechanism. Hopefully, other public relays also implement it.
I use it for global feed, a bit safer, almost no spam for now :)
A spontaneous thought. Wonder if a WoT could help mitigate the problem. Likes and positive comment by accounts that are themselves established would act as a vouch. New accounts with zero trust would need to complete a captcha to post.
