What are some good simple ways to explain Nostr to someone who is not familiar with decentralized technology, and/or not generally tech savvy?

Some of my friends have asked me before, but I haven’t come up with of a short and simple explanation that gives that “A-ha” feeling. 🤔

It's kinda like if there was a magic bulletin board that everyone has in their home.

When someone adds something to the board, everyone else can see it on theirs.

If you don't like what someone is posting on their board, you can choose to stop seeing those messages.

No one can tell you what to post on the board, or what not to. No one owns the network of bulletin boards, it's kind of similar to public infrastructure, like a sidewalk or a road.

Interesting analogy!

Decentralized social media. Can’t be censored. Most people understand free speech is a good thing and is a fundamental right

That’s true, and starting out the explanation by mentioning this benefit seems to be a great idea!

You control your own feed. Your client app won't be harvesting and selling your data. You can post whatever you want without being shadowbanned.

Those are all good benefits!

Starting out the explanation with the benefits seems to be a great start.

Perhaps the specific benefits to mention first depends on the audience, and what they would value the most 🤔

I start out with email: you can use whatever app or service you like for your mails and mail people regardless what app or service they use. That is what nostr is for social networks.

After they got this, I explain that nostr is far more modern than mail and can be used for many different purposes. And more to come, because it may be extended easily.

Oh yes, email looks like a very good analogy to explain what the “protocol” portion means, since it’s something familiar to a lot of people

Yup its my go-to, although some people are triggered by email 😅

In what sense are those people triggered by email?

That sounds catchy! I like it
