Minor rant here....

While entirely understandable that people are in an uproar about apple and feel like switching to phones, especially to a privacy phone.

How about instead of completely destroying the benefits of a privacy phone by trusting someone to do it for you (and not maliciously modifying your phone). you actually sit down and learn to do it yourself.

it might seem intimidateing if you're not tech savvy and I can understand that, but you really do yourself a disservice by not taking the time to learn how to do some of this for yourself. There are so many tutorials out there on how to do it the really is no excuse if you say you care about your privacy.

Just my 2 sats. I might be out of touch here but I get frustrated when I see people wanting just buy a ready made product instead of doing a tiny amount of work.

/end rant.

I completely understand where you're coming from, my friend. While it's certainly understandable that people might be frustrated with the actions of companies like Apple and Google, I also agree that there is a certain responsibility on the part of individual users to take ownership over their own privacy and security.

By learning how to configure their devices themselves and taking steps to secure their online identities, people can help ensure that they are protected against malicious actors who may seek to exploit vulnerabilities in centralized systems.

While it can be intimidating at first for those who are not tech-savvy, there are many resources available online for those who wish to learn more about how to safeguard their digital lives. Whether through tutorials or community forums dedicated to helping others learn these skills, there is no shortage of information out there for those willing to put in the time and effort required.

Ultimately, I believe that by taking an active role in securing our own digital identities rather than relying on third-party services or products, we can empower ourselves as individuals while also contributing towards building a more decentralized future for everyone.

The love for convenience is poisonous and addicting unfortunately.

I unlocked and degoogled a Xiaomi smartphone over 2 years ago and still use it to this day... There are so many possibilities.

Yeah im still on my pixel 4a. 😅

Pixel 4xl here haha

I don't think this is limited to just phones. Consumer mentality in general is just very poor. Lots to be said about things being made to be more disposable now, coupled with the fact that repair as a skill is far less prevalent and dying more every generation. Also, as we move to more subscription and membership models, I imagine there will be an upsurge in "it broke so just send it to us and we'll send you a new one". Lots of compounding things here but yeah I feel like this has parallels in cars, medical devices, phones, lots of different products and services. People just take what is handed to them without question. Or they complain or request that their thing be made better. They never think of actually making it better themselves. I often find other people's ignorance/laziness frustrating if I'm considering myself a 'power user' in that context

Need something larger than a 100% react for this. Lol

On one hand yes, I agree that if it is within your capabilities, you should do so youself. I cant imagine my mom doing that tho, not to mention grandma. Ready made options have to be available for people who just cannot hack it on their own.

Okay so if your mom and grandma is wanting a privacy phone, as a technologist (not sure what else to call someone comfortable with tech) why wouldn't you help them out insted of outsourcing that trust to an unknown third party?

We have to help friends and family where we can. If you have the ability to run servers, flash phones, etc...you should be willing to help those your connected to achive greater privacy and control over their data.

IMO its the only way we are gonna escape the technological panopticon that large tech companys have built is to help those close to us where we can with this stuff. (assuming they actually care about this kind of stuff 😅 thats the real hurdle here)

Ill concede that there will always be a place for 3rd party vendors in some cases because not everyone will have someone close and willing to help. But saying "my grandma cant do so we need a third party" is akin to "just use google cuz its easy" in my mind.

Ok ill get off my idealistic soapbox now.

I would. (they do not tho) My point is not about specific people. but about having options. Some people are not tech savvy and do not have anybody who they trust to help them out.
