They somehow figured out my real name and birthday based on the email address (different one than the one I used back when I had an account many years ago) and when I tried to delete the account, it keeps saying that the password is wrong (despite it being fine for logging in). What sort of dystopian nightmare is this?

Impersonation on steroids. The faster it grows the faster will decay and the need for real authentication will rise. The transition time will be annoying though.

The problem with that is vendors need to be vetted somehow because otherwise that marketplace will be filled with scammers and fake listings.

Same thing here. Created a brand new email that had never been used before. Signed up for market place. Got banned after a few hours and blocked from marketplace unless I uploaded an ID or a selfie to prove my age. I just didn’t do anything and eventually the approval came in and now I can use marketplace. It seems they just ask for your id as a courtesy—I bet they have a copy of my drivers license already—they just didn’t want to disclose it lol. .
