In the immortal words of 42nd President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton, it depends on what the definition of βisβ is.
I am either a idiot or that quote is confusing lol
Haha, no worries. Itβs from back when Bill Clinton was being questioned about Monica Lewinsky.
In any case, your question was βwhat is Free Will?β. Itβs an βisβ question. Definitional.
Definitional questions are often the most savagely debated, but also often pointless in application. How does defining Free Will make a difference to you? In what way would your behavior change based on that definition? What do you hope to learn in exploring these questions?
The exact quote was βit depends upon what the meaning of the word βisβ is.β https://youtu.be/0_ipnwoPczQ
Its fascinating and it challenges my own beliefs
This whole thing started off as a way to see each other view without argueing but i found a great enjoyment in seeing the different viewpoints
To me, Free Will is observed, non-deterministic, goal-oriented behavior carried out by a complex adaptive system.
That is, if an entity has goals and takes steps to realize them, then it is exhibiting Free Will, IMO.
When your actions are not coerced by someone else or something else
Free willβ¦
When action mirrors dreams and insurmountable obstacles do not get in the way of chasing oneβs goals!
Itβs always about the climb. Free Will is not free - it takes a bloody minded individual to pursue it.
Thanks for these thought provoking threads. πππ
I am glad you like to ponder on these its very fascinating to me.
You tend to have some beautiful way of describing them ππ«
56 years of observation my friend. πππ
seems ok, but "it's about" or "it's always about" are a tad sketchy and way overused. decent sentiment though.
i'd say, rather "my actions are my only true belongings, I can not escape the consequences of my actions." (and those are not my own words but apt)
and keep this in mind when you hear intellectualized speech that doesn't come from personal experience. if you haven't lived it, it's better to listen, not project ideas.
π
Iβm not sure I understand what you mean?
I pretty much write from personal experience, not from what Iβve read. Itβs helped me live a large life. Travelling extensively has allowed me to climbed lots of mountains - both physically and metaphorically.
Iβm interested in what your take is on my take. π
ah no. you misunderstood me and I probably should have been clearer. I was speaking generally in the end and not about you at all ... more of a tip to avoid stinky fake zen people who reek of "words". (I wouldn't have said the last part if I thought you were a faker π)
Hahaha Iβm def not fake β¦ just old and have been around the block a bit! In a good way πππ
The ability to make your own choices and influence different outcomes.
No predetermined path that you must inescapably follow.
over the course of my life
i have only listened with worry when someone has expressed to me that free will doesnt exist. it, & i know this is anecdotal, has exclusively been new age people (again, in my experience maybe i just have strange odds on this one.)
I think it depends on the context if we are talking the ability to make our own choices then yeah free will exists.
If we are a product of our environment and nurture perhaps not really.
Def a intresting topic to think on
why would we be products
are we alive to you in your framework?
I am saying we are all of our past and some of it can form how we make decisions or hinder us thus taking away free will.
In my framework we are definitely alive i am not particularly strong on my view here
yea i hear you
i guess i see hindering as maybe simply part of the ecosystem of the immensity of a single person. that it is serving free will purpose even if inexplicable to a smaller sense of self Self
like just the sentiment of..
the mind can think whatever? hallucinate whatever? blame whatever? compartmentalize whatever?
the feet are free & know what they are doing? in their simplicity in their knowing about what they want & where they are going & at what speed at what time?
idk
I hear you and i am exploring my own view on free will with you i can make choices ofc but my moral compass is set by nurture and my past.
I think am not done thinking about it π
Free will is choosing one of the paths left open to you by all your previous choices and all the choices made by every living thing since the dawn of life on earth 530 million years ago.
One letter short of Free Willy
Free to BLOCK anyone on X, Free 2shoot given a loaded Gun LoL
an illusion
But surely i can think about being free which if unencumbered would be real?
Free-Will is an independent Japanese record label founded in 1986 by Color vocalist Hiroshi "Dynamite Tommy"
The ability to act towards a hopeful result without interference from an outside individual.
If you free urself from own G - then u acheived ur real free will or else u still slave (white/black/brown/yellow/lgbt dnotmatter)
not u - mean "anyone"
I understood no offence was taken π
Free will is ability by stable person to do something good for any legit purpose without pressure or influence or interference from anyone else or their policy or society . which is rare n imaginary in present day. it is not to cofused with "anyone determination" or "dream".
This deep this early? Man
What is mu?
why are you asking that on here? mu is not possible to penetrate online nor is it possible to penetrate without a teacher.
going there online is like washing mud with mud.
have you completed that koan with a teacher? I think not.
That bead of electricity that runs through you, that kicks you into gear, and sparks action.
it is the possibility to make our own choices.
but to make our own choices we must know who we are.
and to know who we are we must aware of our illusions.
being aware of our illusions takes us to a place of infinite possibilities.
starting from this space we are aware of life.
and then our action meets life's needs.

thank you for inspiring me to investigate this within myself
not bad
I think you can probably say the same with less words, less explanation and more immediate though. can you see this in nature and say it in a metaphor? (I think you can)

it's hard cause the ego gets in the way. but thanks for offering me this. this inspired me to write some other things on paper in my language. β₯οΈ
I like that being aware of our illusions thats is going to be pondering in my mind for the rest of the day π€
An exquisite, subtle state of consciousness, merged with the universe in its entirety, acting from the knowledge that all action is will and yet all activity deterministically follows from the state of existence in the previous moment and leads into the next.
Something something Be Here Now.

The natural decision making process of human life, where humans take action according to their own calculations and goals.
Free will is only what you make of it. If you make yourself to be free, you are free.
