This March iOS starts allowing 3rd-party AppStores. Still on its own rules and only in Europe but its a shift. As I understand (may be wrong here though) most popular Androids don’t let you chose stores, they just bundle theirs own

What if we make an AppStore client on nostr that works with NIP1 (maybe a couple more simple nips) that allows you to run your own store? You could even make it compatible with android, windows etc if you want. And partner with Strike to allow in-app purchases with bitcoin

Of course, even if our open-source community manages to accomplish this project technically, we won’t be able to run it on our iphones since someone would have to operate the platform and pass Apple’s review which I believe would be near to impossible, at least for the first time

But if we would build some skeleton/prototype, there could appear more companies willing to make business on that and promote nostr as a sideeffect

Googling “open-source app store” gives me zero relevant results

The entitlement to run a third party appstore requires a $1 million dollar letter of credit and charges a €.50/user/year fee for downloaded apps. It’s malicious compliance that likely won’t work in practice.

I think its rather political question. If Europe wants to force Apple have competition on stores level, it would achieve it

That may be EU govt sponsored appstore, yes, but it still could in theory built “on nostr” (whatever it means)

Also its probably just a beginning in this game

Apple is just larping, and Android has a bunch of open stores. I've been digging deep into the subject, if you're interested: https://zap.store/nostr/

Great writeup! Even though I can’t agree on too much hopium for nostr and bitcoin to fix everything and for (current) “AI” to change software development significantly

However, my suggestion is rather touches pretty different topic. In short, its bad to get a couple of new centralized app stores on iOS but its much better than none.

And if one of new centralized appstores utilizes nostr in one way or another, not necessarily in a full decentralized and censorship resistant way, it may be highly beneficial for nostr in general imo

Android lets you choose stores.

FDroid is a great example.
