Try logging in with Nostur and see if that resets your follow list.

He means reset to original follow list. Nostur can restore it from a local copy but only if you used Nostur before

Correct. Restore is the more appropriate word than reset.

It worked and I have never used nostur. No local copy or anything.

Might have picked up the old follow list from a relay that had not gotten the new one yet.

Any idea how this happened and how did nostur know to restore it? It prompted me straight away saying it detected missing contacts.

Probably it received both new and older contact lists, maybe from different relays. Most clients will just keep the newest, Nostur will ask to restore if the newer one has less contacts.
