I know about their existence. In ancient pagan times, they were very common. For example, in Euripides' tragedy "Iphigenia in Aulis," Iphigenia, Agamemnon’s daughter, is compelled to be sacrificed to secure the gods' help in the war against the Trojans. What I don’t understand is how a blood sacrifice can grant power and fame.
