Definitely recommend adding a pod relay or two
Filter.nostr.wine is excellent. It aggregates public relays and filters out a lot of spam. There’s also a welcome.nostr.wine where you can see posts by newcomers.

Also, relayable.org is a fast, high quality spam filter, and I believe it’s donation-based 🤙
When using something like Filter.nostr.wine is it free to read but you have to pay to write to the relay? Or is it paid to read and write?
I believe it’s free to read & paid to write. You can add wss://filter.nostr.wine for read access
Then the paid version has you re-add the relay with your npub attached. I think the readme above details exactly how that works
FYI I flipped on both Filter.nostr.wine and relayable.org in my universe feed and filtered out all other relays , and I’m not getting any notes showing up. So further investigation is warranted.

It may be that the filter version is paid to read as well

Yeah that’s correct. Filter is a paid to read/write but nostr.wine is free to read!
A mixture of paid and free are best, IMO. This allows you to cut down on global spam and allows you to pay relay operators for service all the while keeping public and free relays to find new Nostriches.

It’s a paid relay that will require a small one-time fee (in bitcoin, payable using the same wallet you get zaps to), then not only can you read from it, but you can post to it and have your posts rebroadcast by it.
That one in particular was put up to make sure SWers don’t get blocked.
