I asked this before....

Is anyone here a #prepper? What things do you stock? For me, food, water, wood, ammo, toilet paper, and other stuff that doesn't go bad (water filters, etc).

I was a boyscout (always prepared) but I don't wanna be a weirdo #asknostr #survival

Precooked, dehydrated beef.

Tallow, salt, honey.

Water filters.

Seeds.

Just to me “prepper” means irrational stockpiling of stuff to appease fear. Being prepared is a practical approach to keeping your family safe. I store supplies equivalent to a 3-4 week camping trip. Maybe it helps in a natural disaster or maybe we just enjoy ourselves at a new national park. Sounds arbitrary, I know. But in my head it feels like there’s a mindset difference.

I appreciate this. I do about 6 months, after that who cares

Modern prepping does often seem to be fear-based. There are things that overlap with age old ways of living, and that is what I've come to be more interested in. Historically people had a low time preference, had to prepare for winter, knew how to preserve foods, etc. This was all just a natural part of a household until about 5 minutes ago when we grew too accustomed to globalization, complex systems, and outsourcing responsibility.

Not today fed boi

Jk

Same things as you but also extra feed for the animals and BTC

Fed boi,😭😭😭😭😭

Jk

We do what we can. Similar list as yours.

Quality foods like salted/ cured meats, shelf stable items, fats, beans, lentels, etc. are far superior to the garbage 30 year survival bundles prepping websites like to sell. Returning to the ways people used to preserve and store food is fun just as much as it is prudent.

Life is more than survival so a robust library, decent board game collection, and other similar analog items are good to have too.

Tbh im not worried about zombies or nuclear war, that crazy apocalypse stuff

im more worried about about Gaza/Haiti/covid lockdown/ govt overreach sort of situtations

Seeds! If you can grow/raise your own food you have a superpower, everything else follows

How to store, and where to buy?

We are big into seed saving, so no need to buy each year. Store seeds in airtight containers in a dry, cool dark place. Most will last for many years. We buy most from Johnny’s, High Mowing, and Territorial Seed. Also Baker Creek for more heirloom (open pollinated) varieties which are what you want if you’re looking to save seed as they will breed true to type.

I try to always collect seeds and plants or cuttings when hiking. Taking a few stinging nettle plants when there are hundreds is not going to hurt anything. I am trying to root 20ish sticks from an apple tree that the city does not take care of at the disc golf park. I also like to bring fruit and nut seeds to plant when hiking. Who wouldnt want an apple tree next to the trail? Seeds get saved from my garden for next year

Try to form relationships with other homesteaders and gardeners. Perhaps create a club, so many benefits can come from this.

I also try to bring I stock knowledge, I often have podcasts going.

I stock rice and beans and salt, all the normal prep stuff, but I focus more on building soil and food production systems that can scale pretty easily.

Relationships and cultivating a strong community is the often overlooked essential ingredient in prepping.

I personally like being a weirdo. 😂 just be yourself

I... did not think of this. Thank you for that
