Both are important. Eating a surplus of “high quality” calories will still make you obese and unhealthy.

I have not heard of anybody that got fat eating whole foods.

Eat a diet of whole foods like potatoes, bananas, rice, beans and nuts and then tell me again you can't get fat eating whole foods only...

My daily food intake is 30%-40% carbs including potatoes and rice lol

That doesn't mean that your statement that eating whole foods doesn't make people fat is true.
