if i get enough zaps i'll use them to run a fast relay out if my own house. At that point the only cost should be electricity and I should be able to run it indefinitely.

Gonna need some hard drives, and an actual box.
One of these with some lightweight linux OS (or maybe openbsd if i want to get into uncharted territory)
It has a 180W power supply? On for 24 hours a day, 365 days would amount to around €360 p/j for electricity – in the Netherlands (€0,23 per kWh)
Would probably buy a box off of ebay and add some additional upgrades, memory and storage should be sufficient. Cloud is just so expensive

There is some sort of reporting mechanism here and I used it to flag some I’ll stuff on global. But it’s a black box for me now.
You won't need a very large machine. Strfry is insanely efficient. I'd go for disk io over size. Notes don't use much space. You will probably end up running something even cooler like a primal instance or maybe even a search provider if you get a really fast machine (just to give it something to do).

I5-6400? How much memory does strfry like?
It'll take as much as you give it for caching.. the thing is it's hard to tell because relays don't tend to be very busy unless you really have a huge amount of users.. for nostr21.com I have maybe 100-200 simultaneous connections and it's no where near maxing the machine out (8 gig ram, 4 vcpu vps). It's been running for months but the adoption is a slow ramp. Database on disk is only about 8 gig (running since November 2022), 3 gig when dumped to json.
Free relays is a paradise for the spammers make it paid! That way you have more decent users increase your privacy and get paid for your work, time spent and costs.
Or PoW is another option 🤷

Well PoW is well documented but i never saw that config in any relay do you?
